How fast is the actual internet connection? If it isn’t 1Gb or faster, then you don’t need a 10Gb router. But you may benefit from a 10Gb switch, with 10Gb connection to the NAS and to any computer that heavily uses the NAS.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

I would get a 10gb switch, and lock that sucker up somehow, set it to only transport ssh input to the line con, make sure there is no way to access the console port, and have a talk with your roommates about one person being the admin. If everyone is always changing settings, you will never have a smooth running Network. That's why tech companies still hire an Admin, versus just giving everyone access.

letting everyone have access is waiting for something to get screwed up.

@GDRRiley @PETRGangKing Normally we have had the router set up and no one touches it due to settings with telco being finicky and that has worked well but due to more computers being added to the network people are getting shit speeds of sub 5mb. We have routers in a chain connection around the flat and everyone in the flat is a backyard network specialist and knows only the basics of a network i wouldn't trust any of them to be in charge of the network including myself sorry about bad grammar

  • What kind of equipment did the ISP provide to hook you all up? A few pictures of the equipment would be helpful here.
  • With how many people do you have to share this internet connection? 5, 10, 20, 300?
  • How is the internal infrastructure laid out, do you have a diagram? What does "routers in a chain connection" actually mean?
  • What's the total budget?

First of all: someone has to take charge in maintaining the core network; having everyone just do their own thing is a recipe for disaster.

Main Linux rig: HP Elitebook 2560P (i5-2410M, 8 GB, Pop! OS)

Living room/couch gaming rig: AMD 5800X, Asus TUF Radeon 6900 XT, 32 GB, 65" LG C1 OLED

Home server and internet gateway: Dell Optiplex 3040 MFF (i5-6500T, 16 GB, Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS)

Phone: Asus Zenfone 10

Sounds more like routing overload rather then bandwidth limitations. And with the nas unless its something fairly high end with multiple disks going to 10gb wont do squat.

Just so everyone has the same info, what networking gear are you running right now (model numbers etc) that will give people an idea of what your doing and on what gear your attempting it on.

Wait.. Are you saying you don't trust yourself to be in charge of the Network? Somebody's got to be in charge. And if you guys are really all living together for the internet connection (which is.. Interesting btw) but there is nobody there that candle the configs, it would probably be a good idea to hire someone to handle it. Normally that would be a pretty ridiculous suggestion, to hire a network admin for a residence, but I think the fact that so many people are living there strictly for the internet, yet getting shit performance, I think it would be a necessary expenses if nobody who lives there can do it.

depends on the size of the place. My company does internet and cable for apartment complexes, the smallest we serve is a single building with about 100 residents. We install a router, server, switches, and (if desired) APs, and manage it all and provide a call center service.

Edit: To provide more context to this topic specifically - the smallest property that I'm aware of that has 10Gb router, server, and core switch, has about 400 residents. They wanted a 1Gb connection with the option to upgrade to 1.5-3Gb within the next 3 years.

I wasnt suggesting them to bring in an Enterprise Level Networking team, but maybe pay a guy to come out once and evaluate what they have, recommend the necessary equipment, and then set everything up, who might be available to come out and fix any issues that may arise. I realize it sounds silly, given that they are just in one flat, but if nobody there can do it, and they are all living there specifically for the internet connection, SOMEBODY needs to configure everything.

I agree completely, and I knew you didn’t mean bringing in a company to manage it (we have more employees than this flat has residents). It sounded like you were saying that there wasn’t even enough residents to justify a single consultant to help out.

Ah gotcha. No, in my opinion even if there was just one person living there, if the internet connection is the reason for being there and it is performing below expectations, I would still recommend getting help otherwise they could live anywhere and just get a decent residential connection and get better Performance then 5mbps.
