What is the difference between i7 7700k and 7740x

The only differences I see are socket, TDP and base clock speed.

7740x is also $5 cheaper on pcpartpicker.

 

Also is higher TDP better for overclocking?

cache size is different aswell

 

socket makes a big diff as the mobos differs and in turn features

 

id hope that the enthusiast platform cpu would do better

Since the 7740x requires x299, you'll end up spending more on a board. The cache sizes also differ. The 7740x is the better of the two but I'm not sure it justifies spending significantly more on x299.

Higher TDP is generally worse for overclocking - it only means more heat that you have to dissipate for cooling (costing more in cooling)

Also, the cheapest 2066 motherboard costs about $100 more than a 1151 mobo.

The new architecture may have some iicp improvements, but it's not worth the extra cost.

Personally, I'd go with a used 7700k.

7700k is for Z270 boards and has iGPU.

7740X is for X299 boards and lacks iGPU.

I'm pretty sure the cache sizes are exactly the same.

L1 Cache

4 x 32KB Instruction
4 x 32KB Data

L2 Cache

4 x 256KB

L3 Cache

1 x 8MB

Yeah, double checked. PCPartpicker says that the caches are the same.

That is what I was thinking as well on the man. site and pc part picker after lining them up perfectly and constantly switching between the two.

yeah but the x series baords are much much much more expensive. it's not a CPU you want to buy

seems cache size is the same, i read somewhere the mainstream had 6mb rather than 8mb, my bad for not checking on ark before posting , sorry guys

Before you go and buy a x299 board, why don't you buy a z370 board with an i5-8600k? The 8600k outperforms a 7700k and is a good overclocker according to some tests. Also it's 40$ cheaper on pcpartpicker.
