New videoediting rig for $2200

Sklomp

My dad needs a new rig, because his laptop is dying (hdmi use=thermal lock up, vents cleaned an tc replaced)

He just bought about half a year ago a beast of a consumer videocamera which records in an heavy quality mts files.

He wants to replace his laptop with an desktop that is really powerfull and could handle it with ease.

His might go for an iMac, but I wanted to give him a good windows alternative that could be a little cheaper and better.

My list of things i think it needs to have:

Intel i7 3930k (6 cores and overclock)

H100i (silent and good cooling)

x79 board (please suggestions)

16GB ram

GTX680, needs to be cool and silent (need of cuda, wants to use adobe)

SSD

2TB western digital black

Corsair 760i (no need for sli, just high efficiency and option for multiple harddrives with ease)

Stealt looking case that is silent and has hotswap (for running backup drives at high speed)

Color accurate screen, best would be 27inch high res (why he likes iMac)

Please leave suggestions, i really don't know witch mb, and gpu manufacturer i should chose. For case i looked at 550d and r4, but both don't have a hotswap bay

If he's got a budget of 2200, you should definitely go the X79 route. The ASUS Rampage IV Extreme is a great X79 board, but Gigabyte also makes a few nice boards as well. For the GPU you might want to go the 7970 route, those cards perform better in games and I think in video rendering applications too, but don't quote me on that one. Good brands are MSI and Sapphire, but really everyone makes the same GPU, it really comes down to the customer support, where I've heard EVGA shines. For the case, go for something like an 800D or a HAF X, but there are a ton of other options. And finally for the screen, any 2560x1440 screen would be awesome, ASUS and Dell make good panels. Hope that helps!

Good ideas so far.

Firstly, your x79 board: the ASUS Sabertooth X79 if you can afford it ($340) or an ASRock X79 Extreme3

Based on your price-bracket you can.

Get some basic Kingston HyperX Beast RAM (16GB, 2400MHz (very fast)) ($110)

Don't get a GTX 680. Get a FirePro V5900 for rendering/editing, etc. ($425)

If you still want to game, get a GTX 670 on top. ($400)

Get a Samsung 840 Pro at 128GB for OS and programs ($150) or a 256GB if you can afford it ($250)

Get a Samsung 840 Pro at 64GB for caching ($100)

Caviar Black is good; recommend the Seagate Barracuda if you need to conserve cash though.

Get a 600W PSU instead

Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088

As for a Stealth case that is silent, get one that you like and put Noctua fans in it

Any IPS panel at 2560x1600 or 2560x1440 would work nicely

As for costing, the stuff I mentioned above is about $2300, including the GTX 670 AND the FirePro but NOT including the display (you can get a 1080p, 27" monitor for around $300).

Depending what video editing programs he was going to use could change this. If he is going to go the Adobe route the gtx680 would probably be better for the CUDA support.

I was thinking about an NVIDIA car because he cut down the list of programmes he wats to use down to adobe premiere which supports cuda. And there probably won't be gamed on at all.

For the case, I asked my brother what he has. He has aan Cooler mAster silencio 550. I slept once next to his computer when it was renddering so do you have thought about it? he didn't build in it so don't know if it is difficult

Unfortunatly i can't get the beast memory here, i live in the netherlands and only really expensive sites or sites i don't trust sell it

The iMac will not perform as well. You can always make this a hackintosh to use Mac software.

Why do you need a bluray writer? Otherwise it's good.

I think my dad needs an bluray because he wants to play it on our hdtv and a bluray player is probably the best way, a htpc is to expensive and running it of a usb isn't working good.

I configured the imac because he want's to choose between it.

Instead of wanting a hotswap, have you thought of using an external USB 3 or Thunderbolt hard drive? For your dad, I would go with..

Case: Fractal R4 or 550D or 500R

PSU: Cosair AX650

CPU: 3960x

Motherboard: Asus P9X79 Pro

CPU Cooler: H100 and replace the fans with Noctua NF F12s

GPU: 7950(Only if he wants to game. Or if he is running multiple screens, the 3GB of VRAM would help)

RAM: Anything is fine. Maybe 1866Mhz

Storage: Samsung 840 Pro 256gb

Storage: A hard drive of your choice

For what your dad is doing, I think multiple screens would really help him. Or get a 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor with good colour reproduction.

A extreme processor is wat more expensive do IT wouldn't fit in the budget. And a amd card isn't really an option because he is going to use adobe premiere

What store do you go to? Because I live in the Netherlands too and I can't seem to find a good one for pc parts.

Alright well, all things considered then:

3930K (sufficient)

H100i (for overclocking 3930K)

GTX 680 (sufficient, really)

Samsung 840 Pro - 128GB (caching)

Samsung 840 Pro - 256GB (OS and apps)

Seagate Barracuda - 1TB (movie files)

ASUS Rampage IV Formula (extreme unnecessary)

16GB DDR3 2400MHz RAM

Thermaltake TPG 650W 80+ Gold PSU

Thermaltake Overseer Full Tower Case

TOTAL COST :: $2344.90

Knock out the caching SSD if you need to stay at ~$2200.

What about the quadro series from NVIDIA?? They are made for rendering and such stuff aren't they?

My mistake, I thought you listed the 3960X originally. That being said the 3930K is what I meant :P

I was thinking about going with an 760i because of the silence and the platinum efficiency. Also i don't like that case, but that is taste. Also it looks extreme but it want a big case with a clean look.

does anyone have a suggestion for a 2560 ips monitor?

A good for cooling and yet very silent case it's the corsair carbide 500 R, i built in it, also a very nice yet cheap PSU it's the OCZ zs series 750 w 80+ bronze, also own that, barely heard it while testing the rig outside of the case, nice 135 mm fan in there, cheers

I would also go with a special rendering GPU if you're saying that no gaming will occur there, and with more ram, something like 34 gb, use 10 to 15 gb out of there and make it an actual partition with ramdisk and install all the Adobe stuff in there, Linus has an episode on that, insane speeds helping a lot in adobe programs, and then use the boot ssd for caching the premiere files on there, i used to do it this way, even on a laptop, the ramdisk performance increase was noticeable

What i read on the internet the quadro card that fits in the budget is slower because it has way less cuda cores. Does the RAM-disk be applied when you shutdown your computer? because if not it is useless, the computer will be turned off a lot

Here:

linus explains everything you need to know, the ramdisk is saved on the hard drive or ssd, your choice, i would go with a fast ssd, the fastest you can get, and i also suggest that you turn off saving the ramdisk image file on shutdown, this will keep the 5 sec or less shutdown, the ramdisk will only slow down the boot a little, as it has to load the image onto ram. Once you have your adobe program/s installed, you configure the scratch disks in premiere and you're done, the system will load the same thing every time it boots up

Since you are not using it for gaming then quadro card is good enough.

Use a Samsung 840 Pro for boot and HDD for storage
