Graphics card hotter than expected

I have a GTX 1080, and I installed an NZXT G12 on it with a Corsair H55 cooler. The card is overclocked to +169MHz GPU and +1012MHz memory, which puts it at 1802MHz and 11,106MHz respectively. The GPU will max out around 2100MHz, but then fall into the 2050-2075MHz range once it warms up. Speaking of which, I'm idling around 40-41C and I've seen it as high as 73C under load (usually high 60s in benchmarking and low 70s in gaming). It's still 10-12C cooler than before, but I expected the temps to be 55-60C under max load. Any ideas why it's running this hot, or is this about what i should expect with the overclock?

Do you live in an igloo?

No. An igloo would just be a pond at those temps. Ambient temps are around 26C.

Also, addendum: The card is hitting 70-72 while gaming. I expected gaming to be lower than benchmarks, but I digress.

I hate my temp and it sits at 55c. Only +100 on the clock and max voltage. Sits around 2080. Starting to think the block is clogging up.

My H55 is brand new. I bought it specifically for this. I was lead to believe temps would be significantly lower than they have been, although they're a good bit lower than before.

60c on a AIO cooled GPU is fine, I don't see the issue. My 290x would hit just under 60c with a full cover block under a high OC.

The 290x is not hotter then the sun, the stock cooler was bad. it is no hotter then a 1080ti or titan cards. he also stated his room is 26c, mine was around 22c so mine was hotter.

OCd 290x peaks at 380W, you want to tell me that 1080ti needs 380W of power

that's system power. my system didn't go past 475, with 2 monitors and speakers on the meter too. still at 350w for the card in a 4c cooler room I was just under 60c with a full cover block on a 280mm rad, he is using a AIO with a 120mm rad and getting 60c in a 4c hotter room.

so his block is less efficient with a smaller rad in a hotter room getting about the same temp. on a GPU that is 50W less. I don't see a issue. so mine would of been around 65-70 with his conditions.

He can try re seating the AIO, if it doesn't help he needs a better AIO or full block to get better performance.

Still 50W is a big difference, but you are right it should make much of a difference reseating it.

It's not 60C unfortunately. I've seen it bounce around from 67-73C, depending on what kind of load I'm putting on it. In benchmarks it's in the high 60s. While gaming it's in the low 70s. That's still better than I was getting before with the blower style cooler, but about 10C hotter than I was led to expect.

However, I wanted to ask around to see if my expectations were reasonable, and the responses seem to bounce between "it's fine" and "re-seat it." Maybe I'll try reseating it this weekend if I get a chance. It's just annoying to do with the way the G12 is designed :(

re-seating it usually the go to first thing to test. other wise the AIO might not be preforming as well as you would of hoped.  you can try testing in a cooler environment, basicly every 1c hotter the room you need to add that to the results when comparing.

example if my room is 22c and I get 60c in a 27c room I would get 65c. when looking at review videos note what their ambient temps are.

Reseating with the G12 is an exercise in frustration for me. When mounting a cooler on a CPU, there are typically mounting screws with male thread that pop up through the brace, which is then tightened down with thumb screws. This helps keep the cooler aligned properly while tightening. With the G12, the mounting bracket is female threaded so there's nothing to hold the cooler in place while putting in the male-threaded thumbscrews, and it wants to twist around due to the tubing putting torque on it. Not sure why they designed it that way. Hopefully, when they release the G13, they will update the design.

My computer room is always warmer than the rest of the place, but I suppose I can turn up (down?) the A/C to see if it makes a difference.

Well do you have two quality fan on it at max speed?

No, just one fan. Not sure if I have clearance for two.

I put an extra fan on the cooler for push-pull, and I added a 120mm exhaust fan on the top of the case, and my gpu temps have dropped around 12C.

It now runs around 60C (seems to bounce between 57-62) while gaming or under load. I even ran Unigine Heaven on loop for about 90 minutes and it was still around 60C. I'm much happier with this result. Thanks for the advice, everyone :)
