Upgrade. Monitor or GPU first?

I think about upgrading my gaming experience but I can't decide what path I should follow. I want a new monitor and gpu but I'm not that bonkers to buy them together. Especially if they both quite expensive. 

 

My specs now:

Xeon E3 1230v3 (with slight OC) 

8 gigs of DDR3 1600 ram

GTX 780

650W CM PSU

Generic 1080 TN monitor

 

My desired upgrades are 165hz 1440p IPS G-sync display (AOC Agon) and 1080(ti) (and yes I know I don't need such a powerful gpu). So cutting to the chase I can't decide what should I buy first. I'm closest to buying monitor as prices of monitors rarely goes down and I will still be able to enjoy g-sync even with lower resolution/quality. So... What do you gust think?

Monitor, you can still enjoy an added experience with the monitor, though the 1080 Ti will give same performance as the 780 at 60Hz 1080p.

Monitor first. The GTX 780 is just behind the 1060 in performance so it should still hold up nicely at slightly lower textures on 1440p

I have the same monitor you want. It was possible to play on it with GTX 1060 6G in most games at around 100FPS on HIGH details or 120FPS Medium/High (e-sports games worked at 165+FPS no problem).

Some very demanding games barely went at 60FPS (Rise of the Tomb Raider for example).

 

Unfortunately, GTX 780 is quite lacking in performance for that, prepare to go for Low/Medium settings to get at least some advantage of that extra Hz.

 

I would suggest GPU upgrade first in this case.

Monitor for two reasons.

1. You can use the extra screen real-estate outside gaming and then just turn down settings and/or the resolution in games.

2. GPUs are a still bit overpriced at the moment due to mining, give it another month or two for prices to drop down fully.

I say GPU. But you should wait for the prices to drop again

if you want to play native gsync 165hz you r gonna have to lower settings by a considerable amount

but just save up and buy them both at the same time(or just wait for a sale on either one)

buying that monitor and using a 780 is a waste of the monitors potential because you will have to compromise a lot to get the results you want from a monitor like that.

Upgrading the GPU is a waste of the GPU's potential as the 1080 TI will literally wreck any game of today no problem

but the 1080 TI should be able to handle that monitor very well though to keep it at a constant 165hz at 1440p with gsync will be very hard so most likely you won't be able to max out every game and get the most out of your monitor on triple a games

Random selection of AAA and indies. Now I'm playing games like Watch Dogs 2, Forza Horizon 3, Car Mechanic Sim 2018, Wrekfest and a bit of Sims 4. And yes i saw that monitor but it's TN. But still will take it under consideration.

 

GPU market in my country (Poland) is stabilising quick so GPU prices went back to somewhat decent prices so i.e I can get 1080ti (Strix) for about 3,5k zlotys (970USD - dam'n you 23% TAX'es).

 

@Vespertine @Brennan_Price @TheKDub That's why I'm closer to buying monitor. In extreme situation i could even drop down to 1080 and use that sweet g-sync around 45-60FPS.

 

@crysilis That's what all my friends saying. Buy GPU. I'm tempted as some games i play now like to drop under 30FPS sometimes (WD2 or FH3). I'll need to think this through.

 

I'll drop additional questions:

1. GPU's: What would you choose? Very Cool looking F.E. with a bit of worse performance or giants like Strix or AMP! (Extreme) with cooler temps and better performance?

2. Monitors: 4k60 or 1440p165 both IPS and g-sync?

I'm not too sure which GPU you should get that is 'cool looking' since I don't look at the high end spectrum of hardware often enough.

 

I still think you should get the 1440p165 over 4K60 since it is a wide screen which is great for some of the games you play (especially first person shooters) plus it has that much higher refresh rate thus making it better for multiplayer titles too.

High refresh rate 1440p gaming is the best type of gaming (for now), it can be done with a GTX 1080 Ti, great choice. Get any 1080 Ti that you like, though the cheap DUKE card looks pretty good for the price.

 

I still think you should get the monitor first!

1. Go with something like the EVGA FTW3 if you can.

2. Which do you want? Higher refresh rates or more pixels?

Thanks for helping guys. I'm now sure Monitor is the best choice.
