My PC randomly turns on... at night

kingkvndrick

Hello,

I am rocking an ASrock Z97 Anniversary board with a CX430M PSU... Nothing fancy here.

Every so often, the machine randomly comes on. There is no Wake on LAN or whatever it is... The PC is all connected by WiFi...

What is even more weird, is that my sister's computer with the same mobo (with a VS350) turns on at night as well also being connected to only WiFi...

Is there a way of turning this off?

Thanks.

WOL can happen with wifi  - WoWLAN

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

there are power on alarm clocks in bios that might be looked at and features to power on by keyboard/mouse.

I have one computer that will power on when there is a power dip. It has an always on usb3 feature. I have turned it off but it is impossible to determine if this is a fix as I wont know for certain unless there is another power dip and the computer turns on.

You can go to Event viewer and see what triggers it

as others have mentioned, there are other ways to have this happen.

As for WoL, follow this guide but for the wifi card too

http://www.sysadminshowto.com/how-to-configure-wake-on-lan-in-windows-10-and-windows-8-1/

I use wireless wol, it's a thing, and when one of my desktops got a fresh install of 10 I know it had WOL enabled by default.

I found out using powercfg -lastwake command that my PC was turned on by network adapter (from sleep mode however) so I just went to device manager and disable it to wake my PC. Not sure how it did that.

there must be something on your LAN sending magic packets then, WOL can only originate from the LAN (barring stuff like port forwarding of course) so it has to be something in your house :D

not even magic packets. In the windows 10 clean install I had with WOL enabled by default (not sure if MS did this or drivers did) it had it enabled with all packets, not the magic packets option. And since I have a ton of devices in my house it happened in about say 5 seconds lol

Same problem, same motherboard. But mine is only after being off for around a day

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

its a bios feature. it has to be a bios feature as no drivers or OS are running at power off. Windows might give you GUI options but it will be the motherboard that does the actual work not any OS drivers.

it's an OS option.....you can turn it off in windows.

Yes is has to be supported at the hardware level, which is why I think the drivers may have something to do with it. I know I added the drivers, didn't use the generic ones, and they may have ticked the feature on OS side. Yes you can turn it off bios side, but I like to  have it on for magic packets.

Also I'm pretty sure I have a board that supports WoL and has no bios option to turn the feature off, at least that I've seen. Mainly because it sucks, but yea I'm pretty sure that's a thing, which is why I had to turn it off on windows.
