I7 7700K Worth it?

Hey Guys!

I have a I5 6600K Oc'd at 4.7Ghz...

I am tempted to whack a I7 7700K in there.

Am I wasting my money or will I notice an improvement....

I only game I don't stream or edit or encode anything like that.

with a 960 the 6600k is perfectly adequate.

I've changed my 960 for a EVGA SC GTX1060 :)

1060 a 6600k is still perfectly adequate.

if you only game then in most games you won't see much fps gain (there will be some but not much) there will be some where you will get a larger boost in fps, but it might not be worth the money, unless your a baller and see the price of a 7700K to be virtually nothing. How ever if you do do any CAD or similar or a large amount of things at once while your gaming then the extra threads of the 7700K could be useful to have

The owner of "too many" computers, called

The Lord of all Toasters (1920X 1080ti 32GB)

The Toasted Controller (i5 4670, R9 380, 24GB)

Pinoutbutter Sandwhich (raspberry pi 3 B)

The Portable Slice of Bread (N270, HAHAHA, 2GB)

Muffinator (C2D E6600, Geforce 8400, 6GB, 8X2TB HDD)

Toastbuster (WIP, should be cool)

loaf and let dough (A printer that doesn't print black ink)

The Cheese Toastie (C2D (of some sort), GTX 760, 3GB, win XP gaming machine)

The Toaster (C2D, intel HD, 4GB, 2X1TB NAS)

Matter of Loaf and death (some old shitty AMD laptop)

windybread (4X E5470, intel HD, 32GB ECC) (use coming soon, maybe)

And more, several more

For pure gaming a 6600K in the overclocked state you have it in you'll be fine.

Sure you'll notice an improvement, but assuming you're playing at 1080p 69fps - you wont.

I have just got a 144hz monitor :) I get 300-450fps on CSGO everything maxed out.

But I want to venture into some of the latest games etc

Well then it would go like this:

The 7700k is better than the 6600k because it can clock higher and has hyper threading. You would see an FPS gain in any situation UNLESS your 1060 is being 100% utilised, which likely will be in AAA titles. I suggest you play those games and use something like Rivatuner to see what usage your 1060 gets. Anything below 95 (avg) would indicate CPU bottleneck. In this case the 7700k would help. If its >95 all the time then a 7700k won't net you any gains.

This is 100% correct.

Getting a 7700k would be a waste if your 1060 is at 100% atm, if it is you will only see gains of a few FPS.

I'll do some testing tonight to see what GPU usage is.

What should I use to test it?

Install MSI Afterburner, rivatuner gets installed with it. Then within the app enable monitoring. This adds an overlay to your games which you can choose to show whatever you want. Generally the most basic to have is GPU Usage, CPU usage and FPS. "in OSD" means in on screen display. These are the ones that will show up when you play a game.

After you have done that just play some games and see what your usage is. Play the newer games you mentioned because these are the ones most likely to saturate your GPU.

Yes you are wasting money.

If you want to have improvement in gaming experience, upgrade your graphic card instead.

Edit: Actually your current rig, 6600k + 1060 can play any AAA games in decent fps. Adjust your in game graphic settings to find balance between fps and graphic details.

Personally stepping up to 144hz on 1440p i would spin up 7700k on a 1080 or ti. I assume you run 1080p, in that case i wouldnt worry that much. Like the people here say: test newer games on your system run high graphic settings and scan your fps (notice that fps meters lower your fps a little too), now you want to obv use those hz of that monitor so you wanna be above 80hz minimum (prefer 100+) which means you need a steady 80fps atleasr to enjoy the most hz out of that monitor. If you happen to dip back a little just see if its because of the 1060 or your cpu (on 1080p 1060 should do nice tho). Higher resolutions ask for more gpu demands as in moving away from your cpu bottleneck. However bottlenecks are relevant, and in your case you dont wanna neck below 100fps average. For example: you could run 4k on a lower clocked quad or dual core on gtx1080(ti) but tbose processors will neck your fps around 30-70 and you would need a faster and more headroom(cores, also depending on the development of the game) cpu like a r7 but even better an i7 8 threaded beast of a game cpu like 7700k to raise that fps as far as the gpu can handle. Just measure your system on high demanding graphics on the max resolution and that will tell you if you need a new cpu or a stronger gpu.
