What does this symbol/cable mean?

The monitor I bought wants me to connect this cable to my computer. My question is what it's for?

It is an optional cable that allows you to use the USB ports on your monitor as a USB hub for your computer.

It's a built in USB hub, so instead of reaching down the back of your PC to plug in your keyboard and mouse, you can now easily just connect through the back of your monitor.

Apple's old keyboard, used have have a USB port for the mouse.
