Sold off my RX 470

GordosTacoShop

So, I sold my RX 470 because of the ethereum popularity, and I'm looking for a replacement. I don't want to spend over $200 USD.  I see 1060s are still stupid high, and getting higher.  1050 Ti is too much like my old 950.  I have access to gtx 980 for $200... should I just jump on that?  Is the 980 still a decent option? Thanks~

980 is still pretty good, thats not a great price for one though

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

the architecture is outdated so i wouldn't recommend it unless its like an insane deal which this isn't.

It can't be that outdated, it's only last gen. I'm still running an LGA 1155 Pentium, DDR3, and just got a 980 Ti. And I have a 2012 MacBook Pro and iPhone 6 Plus. So all at least one to three or four gens back. It all works (except the 980 Ti, because my potato OEM PSU doesn't have the right connectors, and I don't want to bodge something together and fry my GPU)!

I've actually never seen the 980 dip below 200...  my only other option in that price range is a 3GB 1060.... and I'm a little underwhelmed by that card.

I would just buy a 1050 and wait out until Vega, but the last year has taught me that AMD supplies are always extremely limited, and chances are it will be even better for mining, so that will inflate prices significantly.

i mean its not terrible but i find it just bad value. and intel didn't innovate for a long time, so processor upgrades where not really interesting anyways. if you're going to buy something last gen and second hand for a price and performance close to current gen than that isn't worth it imo. but i don't know the exact pricing in their area, if i found a 980 here for 200 i could easily buy a 1060 3gb for 10 bucks more even if i miss out on a 5 fps here and there it wouldn't be a huge difference but i would get the better DX12 support and the longer device support and its new, so now i also have warranty. but by any means, if you only look at dollar per fps than its better value so buy it if thats all they care about.

Are the 1060 3GB and 980 really so close in performance?  My local Microcenter has a Zotac 1060 3GB for $170...

Just shy of $400.

Not trying to spend the whole $400 on a new card though. I'd like to keep it under $200.

Grab that 980 since the performance is a tier faster compare to 1060 3GB which is on par with RX-470 unless you can find a 980 Ti for $250.

according to the benchmarks with my specs yea, but it also heavily depends on the games you play ;)

980 is better than a gtx 1060 in terms of performance and 4gb is fine as long as you dont want to game in 4k

It probably depends on the game and it's individual VRAM needs, but I can certainly see how the two could be quite close at times. I think the 980 is probably a better choice between the two, though.

The 980 is underrated imo. I still have a MSI 980 which still performs outstandingly in all games. I'm yet to come across a game that can't do over 60 FPS with everything on ultra with my 980. 200 dollars is a great price for a 980.

I just settled for an EVGA 1050ti for $100 and a baconator combo.

I bought a refurb gtx 980 from Microcenter for $200, but the coil whine was insanely annoying at idle.  Returned it and tried to get the 1060, but they were all gone.  Found a desperate seller parting out his pc so he could buy groceries. He was asking $50 for his 1050ti, but I gave him $50 extra and bought him lunch.

Dang, you got a really good deal for that. As for me, I'm probably going to sell off my two 1070s for $500 each and wait for the market to crash to get 1080s. haha.
