RAM question: Confusion with SR/DR in AM4

Hey people,

So I have recently decided to switch to team red. Haters gonna hate.

I guess some of you have seen this table before regarding memory speeds supported on AM4 boards:

ddr4-memory-support.jpg

After the BIOS update of AGESA 1.0.0.6, are AM4 boards still fussy about single/dual rank DIMMs?

If I want to get a 2x4GB kit running at 2667MHz, do I still have to stick with single rank sticks?

Any DIMMs suggestions are welcomed; my budget is ~$90

Thanks!

It has to do with the stacks of chips on the stick. Single rank means that there is only one chip in a stack and dual means two in a stack. More density usually equals more ranks.

I believe that slide is for non-overclocked RAM only. With XMP (or whatever AMD calls it), RAM can exceed that number.

Ah thanks!  That's the answer I was looking for.

So if I bought these: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-3000MHz-PC4-24000-Memory/dp/B0123ZBPDA
and if hypothetically they are dual rank DIMMs, I could still OC them to 3000MHz (MOBO allowing), otherwise they would stay at 2400MHz, as stated by the table above?

Its pretty tough to find out if DIMMs are SR or DR, and many have heat spreaders, making it difficult to see if they are SS or DS.

Those are likely single rank.

Most of the IC's in DDR4 are 8Gb (gigabit) meaning that eight of them would equal 8GB (gigabytes). The 4GB sticks are likely running 4Gb IC's to achieve its density.

I currently use a pair of 8GB DR Corsair Value RAM (CT8G4DFD5213; careful, there is a SR version as well!). They do not provide a XMP profile and are specified for 2133 MHz CL15@1.2 V.

I was able to push them to 2666 MHz CL14@~1.3 V. Most reviews indicate that DR speed ist equal to SR speed at the next higher setting (in this case 2800/2933 MHz).

The MB is usually the limiting factor concerning RAM speed. My G.Skill Trident-Z 3200 CL14 wouldn't POST on my ASRock X370 Gaming K4, so I will have to sell them. Other MBs might support them (I know of several people with ASUS and Gigabyte MBs that got them running at up to 3600 MHz CL16@1.35 V).

I would suggest you get 16 GB of RAM. 8 GB seems like not enough. The Crucial value RAM cost me 110 Euro. Seems like a bargain these days...
