r9 380 4gb>rx 580 4gb upgrade or wait?

R24

I have an r9 380 4gb and i'm thinking about selling it and buying an rx 580 4gb.

In my country the rx card would cost about 282$ but at the moment I can probably sell my 380 here for about 165$

Also the rx 580 8gb version would cost 53$ more than the 4gb version so that's why I thought going for the 4gb version and I play pretty 'lightweight' games like overwatch, csgo and battlegrounds at 1080p 144hz

And I'm working with a fixed budget of about 300$ so I  can't just save up for a 1070 or anything like that, so should i upgrade now or wait for volta? (cause i understand that vega will be higher end cards to go against the gtx 1070?)

I know its my decision in the end and it depends if i'm currently happy enough to keep using my current system I just want opinions (and also info about when the new architectures are rumored to come cause idk about that)

I have a ryzen 5 1600 and 8gb ram.

Keep you 380 for a while. Waiting for Vega is good because (a) your card is still ok for those games (b) Vega might bring high performance with low price (c) even if you can't afford Vega it will bring prices of the 580 and 1070 down, to level which you can afford.

you could try getting a 980ti second hand which it should cost around 250 on ebay

you dont need 8gb version unless you try to run at 2k and for that price is not worth.

volta is not going to be available for consumers (i think, maybe im wrong) and even if they are, you wont be able to get one for your budget...

tl;dr vega is going to get priced around 400$+, so get the rx 580 now or try searching 980ti, fury x second handed, which the price is around 250-300

they didnt lower the prices after ryzen got released, why would they lower prices on nvidia cards? and less for their own amd cards

I don't get it. Ryzen is a CPU lineup, so neither companies will reduce GPU price because of it.

I could afford a used 980 ti I think but then I'd need to upgrade my 520w power supply :/

One more question.. I saw that the 4gb 580 version is clocked lower out of the box than a 8gb version, but if i were to overclock the only difference would be the vram difference, is that right?

@STRMfrmXMN

520W is plenty for the power-sipping Ryzen chip and even the thirsty 980 Ti.

it's cutting it really close here on the cooler master calculator http://prntscr.com/fd2xtk it should be fine but it's not comfortable

The Cooler Master calculator has monetary incentive to overestimate how much power your system demands. It's fine, look at Guru3D reviews of your hardware if you're concerned about power consumption.

I remember I saw in a guru post where he recommends a 600w power supply for a 980 ti i'll try to find it again

Okay I saw it again and he does recommend a 600w power supply but the card itself only uses 250w and his whole system was using 332w at full gpu load, so I suppose he recommends 600w for efficiency reasons?

all depends on how buff your 12v rail is , the seasonic you have can supply 480w on the 12v and that is plenty for a 980ti (250w) and a R5 1600 (65stock , 95w when at 4ghz @ 1.35v )

Edit: i ran a R9 290 and an I7 2600 off an E7 450 for half a year and the psu didnt even break a sweat , thats pretty much the same power ballpark as the 980ti+R5 1600

RyzenAir : AMD R5 3600 | AsRock AB350M Pro4 | 32gb Aegis DDR4 3000 | GTX 1070 FE | Fractal Design Node 804
RyzenITX : Ryzen 7 1700 | GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI | 16gb DDR4 2666 | GTX 1060 | Cougar QBX

Would I be able to modestly  overclock the 980 ti as well or would that be pushing it too hard? what even  happens if your PSU can't deliver enough power to your system? I assume it would just reboot, can it cause any damage?

For a good PSU, the current limiter (not a fuse, but works like one) will go off and cut power. No damage caused this way, but getting a PSU that can take on all that load is the best way

Reviewers do that to allow for headroom of other components the end user might have in their system.
