@yathisYou use 'an' before a vowel SOUND, so using 'an' before SSD is ok.  Ex. ess-ess-dee.  @twoSalty is right. Now let's get the topic back on track :)

You said vowel.  I said vowel sound.  Either way, wrap up tight.  Living under a bridge waiting for those billy goats is hard work.

Perhaps we are both right. Where is Mr. Google when you need "it"

What are the keywords to use?

My long-term end goal is to have a rackmount NAS for personal storage and shared backups (encrypted backups synced via torrent between friends so everyone has multiple offsite backups).  I just have the money for one or the other right now :)  That much spinning rust adds up.

I sorta have that, I have a NAS, just anit rack mounted, I could but no point, as for torrent shit, no point for me at the moment, mind you I do need to work out how to VPN into my home network, so I can connect to the PCs there over LAN so I can do more shit like that, as I need to be able to do that

  • 1 month later...

I'm also REVISING MY BACKUP STRATEGIES.  And I also appreciate advice added to this topic.

MY SETUP.

3 different PCs in my house. Running (meh) Windows 10 Pro. 2 at 64-bit. 1 at 32-bit. I take lots of photos (and use OneDrive's photo feature to back up my iDevices). I use the (nasty) iTunes app to sync my iDevices to a PC (thus having a backup whenever Apple goes rotten).

MY CURRENT BACKUP.

1 rickety 3TB Buffalo external drive that I move from PC to PC and use either Win10 file history or Win7 backup. That external drives then moved to a separate location (offsite, locked up).

I try to adhere to the 3-2-1 philosophy TekThing proposed (3 backups per machine = 2 in different formats + 1 backup offsite).

MY OPPORTUNITY.

My brother-in-law can help me get "good" prices on Seagate Expansion portable external hard drives (3.0 USB interface [STEA2000400]).  2TB, 3TB, or 4TB options.

I'm assuming the Seagate drives are more reliable & less fragile than my Buffalo 3TB drive.

MY OPTIONS.

a. Buy 3, 2TB drives (I might snag larger capacities).  Each Seagate's reserved for its own PC.  Do the backups.  Physically move the 3 external drives to that separate location I was talking about.  If a drive starts failing, I can double-up backups on the remaining Seagate drives.

...or...

b. Buy 1, 4TB drive.  Do all the backups to one drive and move it to that separate location.

...or...

c. Use the Windows 10 Storage Spaces as a way to mirror & combine drives. HowToGeek Mirroring and Combining Drives?!

What are people's opinions?
