Are you sure that aerial cable and N64 work?

I suspect that this isn't a US setup and that the TV needs to be tuned into the frequency being transmitted by the N64.

If this is a modern TV then you've have to switch the source to analogue and go into the tuning or channel section of the menu system and select to either do a manual or automatic tuning (manual allows you to scan through each frequency until you fins the correct signal, and automatic will do it for you saving each found signal as it goes).

If you didn't do so already, you should make sure you was checking the analogue channel section and not the digital channel section as these should be separate.

You should also consider getting a scart cable as it would remove the need for any of this mess with channels and tuning.

am i right in thinking that there were 2 models of N64 ? one with an RF output and one with scart/composite ?

Your TV likely defaults to the antenna/digital setting when it comes to using coaxial or whatever the fuck it's named.

Make sure it's set to analog and go from there, or better yet, buy S-Video cables for it. They're really cheap.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

most tv today have to be autotuned.

plug in the n64 and turn it on

now do a antenna tv auto scan

if that fails on your remote type 3.0 or 4.0

the .0 tell tv analog mode

i had a local tv broadcasting agency that took awhile for them to understand that you do not put your tunein information on the .0 but tie it with .1 stream

if all else fails hook a vcr up to tv using red white yellow rca and n64 to vcr then select chan 3 or 4 on the vcr

No, because RF output is handled by a separate module which can be unplugged if a scart cable is more the choice for connecting it to a TV (if you look at the back, the connection (which is the same one used for AV out on the SNES and the gamecube) is recessed into the system so that the RF connector when it is plugged in is flush to the back of the system).

It's interchangeable sort of, but not all consoles can output the same thing, and it varies by region. For example if you took an RGB scart cable from the PAL region Gamecube, it would plug into the N64, but it wouldn't work as the N64 can only output RF & Composite for PAL region* or RF, Comp, & S-Video for NTSC.

*The original dark grey PAL N64s can be persuaded to output S-Video using a custom cable, but the later transparent ones are limited to component. PAL N64s are a bit rubbish TBH.
