X34A or PG348Q refresh rates when gaming in 2560x1080

Hi everyone.

 

I'm new here. I've been scouring the internet without finding a good answer and so I finally decided to just ask for myself.

 

Basically I am looking to build a pretty high-end system and I'm thinking about what display to use.

I absolutely without doubt want an ultrawide monitor, but I am generally more concerned with high refresh rates than resolutions. The thing is, I really want the 3440x1440 when in Windows, but I don't mind 2560x1080 when gaming so as to up my fps.

 

So my question is regarding these two monitors that I am looking at, the Acer Predator X34A and the Asus Rog Swift PG348Q: despite being native 3440x1440 monitors, will they be able to output a 2560x1080 resolution in games and will the refresh rate stay the same (~100hz), be lower or be higher?

Refresh rate of the monitor won't change with the resolution, so if you have a 100hz 1440p ultrawide it'll be 100hz.

He means he won't be able to achieve it, not that it won't be there.

But yes, if their asking whether 2560x1080p will result in a higher FPS than 3440x1440p with identical hardware, then yes.

Yeah I'm sorry if I was unclear. I am certain that I, with the pc I'm considering buying, will hit more than 100fps in most games on 2560x1080. My question is, if asking a native 3440x1440 monitor to output 2560x1080 will in any way change its refresh rate, either worse or better? Also if the picture quality would be worse than it would on a native 2560x1080 monitor.

 

I want to use the 3440x1440 resolution in Windows, but sometimes when gaming I might want to lower it to 2560x1080 and I'm just worried that it will suddenly become a 50/60 hz monitor if I do that.

Nope, it'll still be a 100hz monitor. 

 

Not sure about picture quality though, I've always run games @ native resolution.

Ok thanks, that takes care of one of my worries. Now I'm certainly leaning towards a 3440x1440 monitor. 

 

I am kinda worried about picture quality when using a non-native resolution of 2560x1080 though, so if anyone has any input on that I'd be very happy. 

 

I'm also kinda worried that 3440x1440 might make everything too small. I used to have perfect vision but now I don't (it's not a problem with my eyes and thus glasses doesn't help) and I usually have to kinda of squint and keep one eye shut to be able to read text. That's the main reason why I want a big monitor. 

I'll have to go to a store close by and see if they have any larger sized 4k monitor up and running so I can get a feel for if I'm still able to use 3440x1440 with no issues.

Fullscreen 2560x1080 output on a 3440x1440 monitor will make said output look noticeably grainy and pixelated. 

 

If you run a game at 2560x1080 in windowed mode that avoids the grainy problem, but you will be at the mercy of Windows' inefficient GPU management.

 

You can easily scale UI elements in Windows 10. Text, for the most part, can be zoomed in as well, though your results might vary depending on how documents are formatted or how the app is designed. Zooming in on a browser is a non-issue though.

 

For 3440x1440, 34 inches is the absolute minimum you want to go though.

So in other words, would it be fair to say that in most cases 2560x1080 will look much worse on a 3440x1440 monitor than it would on a native 2560x1080 monitor?

You guys have helped a lot. Next step is to find a store that has a comparable 4k monitor hooked up and see how my vision works with it.
