Can I cool this cpu passively?

Basically could I cool my i5 4460 passively by demounting the fan from Silentium PC Fera 3 he 1224? It is not oc, and I just do gaming and light programming on it.

I want to reduce the noise, because the system gets to 45 db on idle and I am planning quieter case fans

you can passive cool ANY CPU

just get a big enough heat sync

should you? I wouldn't - the 4460 is still a 84W TDP part; could try to set a low fan speed and see how temps evolve

Hi,

 

you can cool it passively (I used to run my i5 4590 passively for a while) but you should consider the airflow in your case as the CPU would be affected by the GPU much more.

a lot more should be considered than just 'can i remove the fan from a CPU cooler and be passive'.

can you, sure. but will it be enough to not allow the CPU thermal throttle? not for long sessions in an inadequate case with poor airflow or no flow path to the CPU cooler.
