Thermal paste question

To clean off thermal paste do I have to use rubbing alcohol? I don't currently have any in my house and I don't feel like buying any but I will if I Need to. 

I don't know shit but i'm here anyways.

You can get away with using a dry paper towel if you wish, but using isopropyl alcohol(I recommend it) will ensure all the old stuff is gone.

Let me explain why I'm taking it off. Only reason I'm taking it off is because I removed the cooler and now theres bubbles so I don't think it works efficiently like that. I want to remove it and add more. If I don't clean it 100% will I get less efficiency? It's not like I need to clean it so I can sell it or anything. Not sure how it works.

You should be fine using just a dry paper towel or coffee filter.

No alcohol just makes it a lot easier and faster with better cleaning in the tiny grooves.
