Those "Rare & Precious" metals have a "Value" put on them due to the rareity theres only so much so its worth x and such.  there is a insane amount more to this but yes they are very important to the economy and so is oil. Many economies use to back there dollar with gold they dont anymore due to over printing dollars the US got off the gold standard and now make the world trade Oil in US dollars so that gives it a good amount of value and is why we/ the US have a huge hard on for invading for reasons of Oil
