Radeon Pro Duo or GTX 1080

kennymax89

I currently own a MSI R9 390x and a  ASUS MG279Q 144Hz (Free Sync) 1440P monitor. I was looking to upgrade my GPU and I have the opportunity to buy a brand new radeon pro duo for $650 USD (about the same price as a gtx 1080). I was wondering If i should jump and get the radeon pro duo because I have a freesync monitors and if DX12 might boost its lifespan in the future or should I just get the 1080?

Personally I would get the 1080 because its a newer card, so it might last longer and have better compatibility with newer components, but for you, if you only have 1 monitor, get the 1080.

Try using the PSU Tier List!

Radeon pro duo is not for gaming

Yes it is for gaming, its part of the RADEON family and not part of the FIREPRO :

Also here is AMD's own marketing stuff on the card :

Do you need to upgrade now, or can you wait few months more?

Vega should be released soon, and it might be better for you to wait so you can at least see what Vega has to offer.

And for gaming I would go with GTX 1080 right now. Sure you wouldn't benefit from freesync, but you could still use v-sync. Better than nothing.

Also just to add, I would say maybe wait. Vega "could" be the one for you.

Pro Duo is made for professional work. In raw (rendering, mining...) performance it is better than the GTX 1080, but in gaming it various. In games with good crossfire scaling, the Pro Duo will win. Also, the Pro Duo need 3 PCIE 8Pin connectors, not many psus have that.

I agree with everything except the PSU part.

If someone is willing to pay so much for GPU, I'm pretty sure they have at least half decent PSU for 100$,

And those usually have 4x 8pin for GPUs.

But yeah, I wouldn't get that card for gaming. It's basicly crossfire in single card.

Or get a regular Fury (X) on the cheap. Or as others said: wait for Vega.
