mod atx psu to use on hp z400 MoBo ?

oldnick

i just bought hp z400 mobo\cpu combo for a good price but i didnt knew that it uses a proprietary psu

i tried to boot the system few times and since it wont boot up i search online and find out it has different layout (see pic)

so my questions are :

did i damage the mobo by trying to boot the pc multiple times ?

also can i buy an extension instead of soldiering the wires (i never did that before)? if so please send a link for that extension (prefer ebay)

Unplug the 4pin in the 20+4pin connector.

is it enough to just unplug the 4pin connector ?

In the pic it looks like a hole, is it empty (no pin) in the mb?

Also search "hp z400 atx cable" on ebay and search one for your mb.

This is a signature.

  • 8 months later...

I had exactly the same problem. HP Z400 workstation turned gaming computer.

Simple fix, took an upgraded 550w ATX power supply, cut the wires at pins 12 and 23, bared the wire on the 12v source along side and spliced wire 12 and 23 into it. Fired up, (fingers crossed) whammo. Job done, playing all the HD games it wouldn't play before. New graphics card installed successfully etc. Wish i'd found this fix online, it would have given me allot more confidence before cutting wires on my new PSU.

Good luck!

Glad to know you can actually use standard power supplies with z400 workstations since I happen to own five of these, and they're obviously quite old. I'm curious though, why change the stock delta 475w 80+ bronze @oldnick @Yonton ? Did yours fail, or did you want to replace them before they did ?
