How much space does one 4K picture take?

a 4k picture is only 8 mega pixels

so not much <10MB

It can really range depending on file format, quality, and what's in the picture. (A picture of something is going to take up more space than a solid colour would)

Depends on the context.

Maybe 10mb from a standard camera and compressed.

Depends on the format and if it's compressed. A 24-bit uncompressed BMP, for instance, would take at least (24/8) * 3840 * 2160 bytes or about 24.9MB. However, if you use something like a compressed JPG, it could be around 7-9MB depending on the content. If you're working with videos, then only key frames will store a complete frame.

And if you are taking a RAW file from something like a DSLR, it could be much larger than the BMP.  Possibly in the range of (3*14/8) * 3840 * 2160 = 41.5 MB, though most DSLRs are actually much higher resolution, but offer lossless compression (for example a 24 MP RAW on our camera is typically around 30 MB)

Actually it is just (14/8)*3840*2160=14.5MB since RAWs are not demosaic and thus contain one channel.

Wait... so when they say 14 bit, that's per pixel, not per channel?  Then how do they have so much more dynamic range than something that's 24 bits per pixel (8 bit per channel)?

There are "no channels" the sensor has x pixels and 50% of these pixels are sensitive to green, 25% to blue and 25% to red.

Luma resolution is still 14bit, only the spatial color resolution is much lower than the "sensor's resolution".

OK so on a 24 MP camera for example, what would be it's "x" value the way you stated it?  It couldn't be 24 million, could it, because then the final image wouldn't be 6000 x 4000

x is 24Million 

There are 12 Million pixels sensitive to green and each 6 Million pixels sensitive to red and blue. 

 

The images' spatial luma resolution is 6000*4000 (or close to, depends on the light) the images' spatial chroma resolution is 6000*4000 too, but the chroma resolution is interpolated to 6000*4000 by a process called demosaicing.
