I5 6600k w/ Gtx 980 or i7 6700k w/ gtx 970. Which combo would be better. The PC would be used for gaming, they both end up about the same price, so which one is better?

i5 6600k w/ 980 is better since the i5 doesn't bottleneck your gpu and for games a gpu is far more important in games than cpu

Neither, the 980 is terrible value for money, assuming it's not being sold at some crazy sale price. The 6600k and a 980Ti would be a bit more expensive, but better VFM, and the 6600k and a 970 (well, I'd say 390, if you don't need Cuda), will be cheaper and also better VFM.

The fury, but its pricer and at 1080p the difference isn't great to justify its price.

Than what would you suggest that won't break the bank?

Save up/spend a bit more and get a 980Ti, or wait for Pascal and Polaris and see what's what when you have a better picture of the new generation of GPUs. 

 

As for the CPU, stick with the 6600k or a 4690k; you don't need to spend the extra on an i7 just for gaming.
