Super slow boot at GFs brandnew laptop.

Delano.888

I don't understand...

I'm pretty sure something is wrong here. The boot on my GFs new laptop is absolutely HORRIBLE.

It's a Samsung NP700Z5C (-S02NL), I5 3210M 2,5ghz up to 3,1ghz boost, 8GB ram 1600mhz, GT640M, so it's even okay for gaming (I picked it out)

Now everything seems fine, it's not as great as we hoped, firefox is crashing sometimes but the rest is okay.

However, something must be wrong with the boot.

It came with win8, which I removed, and put 7 on there.

It comes with a 16GB expresscache (S)SD, which didn't work stock with clean win7, but I installed all the drivers and the Samsung Software shows it's in use.

Quickboot is enabled. Shutdown is used all the way because sleep mode still uses about 10% per night so that's not great.

After clean booting, it seems to be done at about a minute. Everything seems perfectly booted, we can click stuff and it shows up without delay.

However, it isn't. The mouse driver doesn't boot for about 5 minutes, so middle click etc doesn't work for a long time.

Also, we put a Firefox shortcut in the startup folder so that boots with the PC, but that also takes about 5 minutes or more till it shows up.

However! If we just click firefox after booting, it comes right on and works perfectly!

Soooooooooo, what is happening here? Is there some delay built in this PC which doesn't enable startup stuff to launch untill 5 minutes? Because it sure seems like it! I don't really understand. I only installed:

All the essential drivers, newest bios, Samsung Easy Settings (needed for the FN keys etc) and Samsung Easy Software Manager, which keeps all the drivers updated.

Also, I tried enabling quickboot, quick shutdown, etc etc. Quick shutdown is just a fancy way of saying sleep mode, and quickboot doesn't seem to do a thing. Expresscache is apparently working so I would expect good boot times.

Eco mode and quite mode are not on.

Anybody got a clue what's happening here?

I'm dutch, so feel free to correct any spelling mistakes I might make.  I try to do the best I can!

What is this "16GB expresscache (S)SD", is it a separate drive or just a separate partition on your main disk? All I could recommend is getting a legitimate SSD.

It's a seperate drive next to the 1TB normal drive. It is advertised as an SSD, but I think it just as well might be a built in SD. It should buffer most used apps, and make it boot faster. Also, an SSD is not needed, it seems to boot quite fast! Howeever it seems like it has delay in startup stuff.

This is not normal, her previous 6 year old laptop had every software including firefox booted within 2 minutes, this brand new one takes at least 5.

Oh, so you mean windows boots to desktop fast, you just can't load any applications before waiting 5 minutes?

If you read the first post, I think I explained it.

The touchpad driver for example, doesn't boot untill 5 minutes.

Firefox, which I put in the startup folder, doesn't boot untill 5 minutes.

HOWEVER, If I just manually click firefox after 1 minute, it works perfectly fine!

Try looking in System configuration. The system migt be set to selective start up

It is indeed on selective startup, I put it there. But that just makes less things boot, which also should make it faster. If you disable something for startup it doesn't boot at all, not after 5 minutes.

I disabled some stuff, like adobe etc. I have always done that, that should just improve boot.

I know what it normally does, but I have experienced that when you use selective startup, it puts other program on a startup delay.

If it doesn't work try and look through the bios to see if the SATA setings are correct and if there is any boot options that need a resetting

Okay thanks, I'm currently not there, but I will report back soon.

However bios is at stock, only one setting changed (safe boot off, because it doesn't allow win7)

So, I tried some stuff:

-High performance energy mode, no change.

-Standard boot, made it worse.

-Bios settings, nothing to change there.

Then, from this thread:

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/15823-things-to-do-on-a-new-pc/

I tried:

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE→SYSTEM→CurrentControlSet→Control→FileSystem NtfsDisableLastAccesUpdate (1), no change.

-Boot→Advanced→ Number of Processors (MAX), no change.

Sooooooo, now what?

It's insane. It's about 5 minutes, on a brand new laptop with basically no software installed yet. Her previous laptop took 2 minutes at most, and had the same + much more software installed.

Did it boot fast with Windows 8?

Which part takes the longest? The windows loading screen, the screen after that, the BIOS, the EFI?

I need more SSDs.

I don't remember, I booted it 1 time with win8, got the shivers (lol) and got the win7 dvd.

The bios and everything is cool. It boots to desktop within 1 minute. It looks done! However, I can't right click, and none of the startup programs have booted (like firefox in the startup folder).

It literally takes me 5 minutes to be able to use the right mouse click, because that is a soft button in a driver. So that's REALLY annoying.

Again, the laptop seems to boot perfectly within a minute. However all the startup stuff (drivers, shortcuts in the startup folder) take sooooooooooooo much longer..

and this happens on windows 8 as well?

I don't remember, I had it on the for about 2 minutes.

But this laptop is supported for win7, all the drivers and software is there on the site for win7.

Actually, it exists in 2 editions, if I would have bought it earlier it would have come with win7. So there should not be problems like this.

It is so stupid and strange, the whole laptop is fast in all it's usage, even gaming is quite alright! Just using it feels snappy and good, like a new laptop should. Even boot seems to be super fast, completely done within a minute! However that's an illusion, because the stupid driver etc startup procedure takes about 5 minutes. All the while the laptop is just as fast and snappy, stuff just doesn't happen!

For instance again:

I have a firefox shortcut in the startup folder. It starts at about 5 minutes. HOWEVER, if I click firefox 30 seconds after the desktop appears, it opens really fast and everything is quick and snappy!
