Microsoft now pays AdBlock Plus to not have its ads blocked

GoodBytes

No, that is because of the ad companies. The ad companies force shitty ads in your face and use your bandwidth. How on earth is that the ISPs fault that some scumbag ad companies are forcing ads through your connection without your approval?

Good for you. I think YouTube ads are incredibly fucking excessive and will block every single one of them.

Because ISPs are the ones that enforce data caps in the first place because of their greed. Youtube (and Google in general for that matter) ads are some of the best, since they usually pick things which you might actually be interested in and also are of the least intrusive. The ad companies and the website hosts are not they greedy ones, they barely make enough money. It is the ISPs with the data caps that want to milk their customers as much as possible. Also if you think Youtube ads are excessive, then you should be in the roads tearing apart posters, not watching TV, buying newspapers, going to the cinema etc. In which case, I am sorry for you sir.

But Linus Media Group are doing a real job. They don't just rely on shitty web ads, and don't cry when people use AdBlock.

Uhh I am sorry to pop your bubble, but they do rely on "shitty web ads" on Youtube. And you mean to tell me that talking in a video like ~30 seconds about a sponsor is better than a 5-second skippable ad(I mind neither tbh). Just get your shit straight man and think about the harm you are doing to the websites and the content creators...

You do realise the internet lasted long before ads were a thing, right? Where people actually uploaded content for fun and not for maximum profit, right?

And heck, if 80% of the internet "died" (they wouldn't) due to no one taking their ads up their backsides, then all the best sites would still exist. Wikipedia, non-profit news sites, independent journalism, science websites, etc.

And you do realise there are orders of magnitude more people on the internet now than back then, thus requiring many times the cost in infrastructure, jobs, equipment and bandwidth.

I'm just going to jump onto a different adblock. or I'll make one. even if it takes me years. I'll make one as a huge middle finger.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with the thought.

the adblock code is already opensource you can just modify it a little

I white list a bunch of sites with non intrusive ads and generally sites that I trust. But going off into the wild without a measure of ad control is horrible. Ever tried playing find the correct download button? Because my customers at work are not tech savvy at all, and they click everything they see. Granted that keep me in work but without ad block these people would just stop using computers all together since they'd need to pay me to sort their PC's out once a week.

totally agree adblock is needed in any work environment I don't want to remove malware all day either

First: It costs nothing to have ads displayed on a page

Second: It does not take any or much (in the case of a short 5-second ad on youtube) of your time

Third: The other way to get funding is if you pay a membership for every website you visit.

I agree on youtube ads are clearly not a problem but there is someplace where ads is a really big proble (75% site of download )

I mean TV has been doing it for ages and nobody bats an eye... And tell Linus (and the rest of the crew ofc) his job is not a "real" job. This guy works hard to provide us enjoyable content in exchange for like 5 secs of our time watching an ad so he can get something in exchange. Nothing wrong with that.

^this is totally false every person I know is upset by TV non-stop commercial. the second part of your post is really true I don't think false job exist (no, because I enjoy my job and I make it without moving doesn't mean it's not a job. Also if I'm not being paid for a job it's also a job) also I think the big problem with ads are not people we already trust (aka linus) but unknown website and random news site

I think I touched on this before as well, and people were somehow okay with ADP doing this.

Double dipping is what ADP is doing. Its shady and scummy as hell.

Wait, since when are we NOT a society that idealizes scumbags, criminals and crooks?

I think i missed the memo...

Linus has said on multiple occasions that ads are a drop in the bucket. They do not rely on ads at all, because they aren't stupid.

Again, I literally couldn't give an utter shit about the "harm" I'm apparently doing. What about the harm that ads are doing to everyone through malware, internet tracking, browsing disruption, and wasted time? Holy fuck, stop defending it. It's scummy and unethical as fuck.

Nope, this has nothing to do with ISPs. It doesn't matter whether people have caps or not, forcing ads down people's throats is still using bandwidth that could be saved with no ads. AdBlock is glorious here. It's fucking hilarious how you call OTHERS greedy, yet you're the one calling people scummy and unethical for blocking ads so that some random scrub on the internet doesn't get a few cents. Fucking spare me the nonsense.

Yes. YouTube ads are the most fucking distruptive.

Road-side posters and billboards are illegal here due to causing accidents. TV channels without ads exist (BBC, NRK), newspapers without ads exist, cinema ads can be skipped by simply arriving after they have aired, etc.

I'm not saying definitively one way or the other, but there is something about adblock in general that rubs my ethical banana the wrong way.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

True, it costs money to run a site. However you can use premium membership (which the LTT forum does) or ask donations. I much rather see a "donate" button than have 87 gazillion flashing ads pop up all over my screen, each of them launching a window with some loud and annoying video if I close them.

And if you run on donations and they aren't sufficient for the site's upkeep, perhaps that means that the content simply isn't good enough.

Nobody is forcing ads down your throat. If you don't want ads, then don't visit websites with ads on them. Also the malware you talked about, that is only a problem of a specific demographic and that is windows users without a half decent anti-virus program. And again it is the fault of the ISPs that impose the bandwidth limitations, not the advertisers. And yeah everybody who uses ads for profit is a "random scrub from the internet" right... The advertisers are doing nothing that has not been done long before the internet or is unethical, they are doing their jobs. And well have fun reading a couple ad-free newspapers, TV channels and arriving late at the cinema, especially when you have a date or going with friends, which is the way most people use the cinema...

Or, just use AdBlock Edge.

And again it is the fault of the ISPs

No it isn't.

Or just say "yeah let's go out to eat first then catch the film 30 minutes later to skip the masses of commercials", which I have done time and time again.

1st point: Yeah use adblock and use up the server's resources while giving nothing to the person hosting it, which is to me no different than being a pirate

2nd point: I specifically stated the reasons why it is the ISPs that are to blame, so I will accept you are right only if you can present me counter points I cannot counter, rather than just saying "no".

3rd point: You cannot be serious about this one. If my date told me she would like us to go late just to skip ads, I'd be like fuck it I will go find someone not so intolerant with things. And you have done it a lot of times and she/he did not dump you? I guess I haven't met any really patient people xD

1) You can think what you like.

2) Okay.

3) I'm assuming you've never been on a date, because anyone I've gone to the cinema with is more up for the idea of going into the cinema a little late to skip the ads while we either spend more time in the restaurant, spend more time looking around the nearby shops, spend more time with each other looking around town, etc, but whatever you say.

Who knows, maybe next time I'll suggest "hey, we better go 30 minutes early to catch all the lovely advertisements! No, you can't finish your meal, tough shit, let's go!".

The first point is a fact, my opinion is the comparison to piracy. Also I have been on a date and I did not say that you should not finish your meal to catch the ads xD. What I said is that it would leave a kind of bad impression imho you wanting to be late to skip the ads :). It just seems a bit too much...

the web add advertising is absurd... Let them do whatever they want.. My country for example has a growing money loan company... and every time I turn adblock I get that BS in my face, I never need loans, and some people crash on that... It can be anything from good things to bad things, ad companies like google and others dont care, their in the money business (of course google is kinda against porn advertisement, and I credit them for that)... so I say, if some company can rip a little money off them by such away, go right ahead...

I hope adblock survives... the guy sais he is a nonprofit like wikipedia... guys if you get the chance, make a contribution like some of you did to Linus. I did it a few times even though I didnt wanted, but they really helped me out and continue to help me a lot of times...

What do you mean by "there should be no dates in LTT"? I did not ask the guy to date with me lol. He just claimed that I have never been on a date before, which I said was false. How is this against the CoC?

i don't get what the big deal with this is, just don't enable the whitelist? or just learn how to block ads manually if they appear.

What a surprise... Linus shits on AdBlock Plus without actually looking into it.

@LinusTech the vast majority of AdBlock Plus users are perfectly fine with ads being displayed, as long as the ads aren't terrible (auto playing audio, ads that block content until you close the ad, and so on). The bad ads on MSN you were talking about? Yeah, they won't pass AdBlock Plus's validation because they won't meet their criteria. AdBlock Plus are completely transparent about letting some ads though their filter, but the only ads that do follows their guidelines. They have also made it very easy to block all ads, even the ones they consider acceptable.

This is not Microsoft going "Hey AdBlock Plus! Here is some money. Now whitelist our auto playing video ads that people hate".

Microsoft, Google, Amazon and the other companies are paying AdBlock Plus to have them go though and validate the ads. If the ad meets these criteria then they will be shown to AdBlock Plus users by default.

  • Static advertisements only (no animations, sounds or similar)
  • Preferably text only, no attention-grabbing images
  • Ad placement:
    • Ads should never obscure page content (e.g. require users to click a button to close the ad before viewing the page).
    • For pages featuring a reading text ads should not be placed in the middle, where they interrupt the reading flow. However, they can be placed above the text content, below it or on the sides. The same applies to search results pages: paid search results cannot be mixed with organic results.
    • When ads are placed above the content of a main page, they should not require the user to scroll down. The available vertical space is likely to be at least 700 pixels. Advertising should not occupy more than one-third of that height. Paid search results on search pages are allowed to occupy more space, but they should never outnumber organic results.
    • When placed on the side ads should leave enough space for the main content. The available horizontal space can be expected to be at least 1000 pixels, and advertising should not occupy more than a third of that width.
  • Advertising should be clearly marked as such with the word "advertising" or its equivalent, and it should be distinguishable from page content, for instance via a border and/or different a background color.
  • Marking and placement requirements do not apply for hyperlinks with affiliate referrer IDs embedded in the content of the page. Additional criteria for hyperlinks with affiliate referrer IDs:
    • Redirects originating from the hyperlink should not present any other webpage than the destination page.
    • In texts, not more than 2 percent of the words can be hyperlinked for monetization purposes.
    • Hyperlinks should not be formatted or behave differently than other links.
    • Hyperlinks should not be misleading, in either content or placement.

You can also go and look at the whitelist (you can look at it like a normal text file), modify it, report ads on the list to AdBlock Plus if you notice that the ads don't follow their guidelines and so on.

I would have liked to see AdBlock Plus validate the ads for free for everyone but my guess is that big companies submit such a huge number of ads (they get validated individually) that they have to spend a lot of resources going though them all. A small fee also prevents companies from just spamming their ads like crazy. Just look at how abused the DMCA system is by the RIAA and MPAA.
