The Water Cooling Gallery

@Enochian If I left this case the stick way where the glass was flush with the front I think the dust would be minimal inside the case.  The 140mm fan on the center console would likely pull in some dust from the bottom but minimal.

I modified the case with 3D printed brackets and mounting points to actually hinge the glass allowing easier access inside the case.  My original goal was a conpletely flush look but quickly realized I wasn’t going to get that with the glass the way I wanted.  I wanted to do this for two reasons.  I am constantly coming up with things to change or try with my PC and I was very afraid everytime I completely removed the tempered glass that I was going to drop it or scratch it.  So I did this.  On top of that I added extra fans near the side glass to get airflow over the RAM, VRM, and M.2 slots.  All of this has led to an increase in dust in the PC, how much more, I probably went from blowing it out every couple of months in my Corsair Air 540 to every month in this one.

As for a dust filter, that thought has me thinking it is mod time again and I should print some brackets to hold filters over the gaps.

I also have a Core P5 chassis and it gets way dustier due to having really nothing in the way.

So overall , the cases like cougar etc, where you have glass not sealing directly the case but sticking out a bit are dust magnets. I wonder if having one place with filters to put fans on pull config and all the rest on push would create an outgoing airflow and stop dust

@Enochian From my experience you are correct about them being dust magnets.  I would not say it is horrible, but it is definitely worse than a closed case.  On the flip side of that, it being open makes me feel the need to clean it more which I did not do much with my Air 540 case so maybe it is a good thing.  I am already in onshape working on filter mounts for all 4 sides of the glass.

I have a total of 19 fans pulling in and 4 fans blowing out.  16 of the fans are mounted on radiators which pull air through filters and the bottom of the case has filters, so I am assuming the only place where dust is entering the main part of the case is the spaced panels in the front.

Not really a fan of how your GPU block looks, so my advice would be to find another one. But hey, personal preference and all that.

rad-> res run looks a bit crooked too. Outside of that, nothing to really bring up.

@EKJake The oddly positioned fans are place on 3D printed mounts that position them over the RAM, M.2 SSDs, and VRMs for actively cooling those.

The In-Win Mars fans are awesome!

Have you noticed improvements when overclocking using the mounted fans?

@EKJake With the fans mounted I have noticed that I can maintain a +50-100 mhz OC on my 9900K and that the VRM seems to hold its voltage better as it is running cooler.  The biggest improvement I have seen is in the nVME drives, they operate about 5C cooler and sustain writes for longer.  Which comes in handy when converting a video or transferring video files to my server.

I chose the gpu block because it's a dedicated one for the card that i have Asus1080ti strix, and rad ->res run has a strange bend because it was the last piece of petg that i had, i waste more pipe that i was expecting, how i said was my first build. thanks for the advice !

Ah, yeah, if you have a non-FE board you'll need to deal with what few blocks you can find.

Just added another 1080 ti to the build known as "The Copper Creamery". Waiting for more LEDs to come in for the blocks and for the case but aside from that it is pretty much done. I would like to make a white acrylic mobo tray so that it looks even cleaner but havent had the time to disassemble everything to put a custom tray in. Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey everyone, almost finished my build, last part that needs to put in is a vertical PCIe bracket and switch out the pump and water reservoir for a smaller version (GPU is too big to keep the current one in).  This update will probably happen somewhere in the summer.

Little bit of background about the build, this is my 2nd attempt, first attempt is shown in first pics.  Specs are pretty much the same, only the graphics card got an upgrade from a GTX 1070 Strix air cooled to a GTX 1070 water cooled to an RTX 2080 water cooled, and the case went from a Thermaltake P3 to a Corsair 570x RGB

Specs of current build:

Corsair 570x RGB black (included 3 RGB fans)

Asus Maximus X Formula

Intel Core i7 8700k (overclocked to 5.0 Ghz. on all cores)

4 x 8Gb Corsair Vengance RGB 3600 Mhz.

GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce RTX 2080 XTREME WATERFORCE WB 8G

EK-Supremacy EVO RGB CPU water block
EK-CoolStream PE 360 radiator
EK-XRES 140 Revo D5 RGB PWM water reservoir + pump

Thermaltake Riing plus 12 RGB fans

Corsair RM 1000i

Samsung 970 EVO (500Gb) NVMe

Samsung 860 EVO (1Tb) SSD

Feel free to comment, am very much open for critique so I can learn from mistakes or just improve my skills.  Although I'm pretty excited how the last build came out.

My new and second custom loop, since last time in early 2000:

  • 9700k @ 5.0GHz 1.330V
  • Asus Z390-E Gaming
  • EK D5 pump & res
  • EK 360 fat radiator
  • Heatkiller 4
  • Arrow fittings
  • A ball valve for draining
  • Old GTX980

Also some videos:

Photos are first of how the tubes and fittings get together, then everything assembled and final liquid in, and finally with RGB somewhat set up with Aura:

Out of curiosity, what type of heatsink, if any, are on the NVMe drives?

@EKJake So a few things have changed in the build all in an effort to increase performance.  Previously the nVME drives were set up differently, M.2_1 was cover by an Asus Heatsink with some left over thermal pads from one of my water blocks installed on it.  The other was bare.

Now with my new MSI Z390 Godlike both M.2 drives are part of their Frozr system and covered by heat sinks with thermal pads on both sides.

Well the final pieces of my loop arrived today (res tube, coolant concentrate and Vertical bracket) from EK, so I just spent the whole night tearing down half the computer, installed my new RAM (Trident Z RGB Royal) but can't get the stupid G. Skill software to see it so I can turn off the rainbow puke (computer is Pre-Aura Sync so can't use that like I did on my other machine)

Specs:

Case: Corsair 570x

CPU: 6700k @ 4.5Ghz

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) 3200 Mhz CL14 Trident Z RGB Royal Silver

GPU: Star Wars Galactic Empire Titan Xp

Storage: 256 GB 950 Pro M.2 and 2 WD White Label 10TB shucked from the 10 TB Easystore Externals

PSU: RM750x with CableMod Pro ModMesh Blood Red

Water Cooling: EK A240G, EK Fluid Gaming 360 Expansion Pack, 204mm Res Tube, EK Fan Mount Vertical Pump Bracket, EK Cryofuel Blood Red Concetrate

Future Plans (and reason for the flashy RAM) Ryzen 3000 Desktop and New Mobo, provided they do a 12 core or more CPU capable of running at 4.5 Ghz or higher). Case Mods are Next, looking to swap the "rear" side panel with a 1/8" Plasma cut raw Steel panel and maybe something similar with some of the other panels, still mulling over the aesthetic and add some case lighting, it got super dark with the rad behind the front fans.

not worth it and the motherboard needs updating to something with RGB support anyway so I can plug RGB devices directly into the motherboard AND take control of the Memory to get rid of the rainbow ram (the G.Skill software that is supposed to do that says I don't have G.Skill ram installed).

I'm in no rush, it can wait until the middle of the year or whenever to see what the next gen Ryzen can do. Oh and when I said 12 core, I meant 12 core 24 thread kind of 12 core, not 6 core 12 thread.

This is neat! I'm going to build something very similar, same case, same raditors, don't realize the Define C is so small. How would you drain your loop in this setup?

I'm considering mount the reservior in rear fan location ... but its really tight!

To drain the loop I disconnect the pipe into the GPU. I can do this with only a drop or two falling onto the small cloth I place under to catch any drips.

I then turn the pump on for a sec until I get cavitation.

I then reconnect the GPU pipe and disconnect the pipe into the top rad which is now empty. The pipe into the top rad comes from the bottom rad so I now have a long pipe connected to the lowest point in the system and an open air vent at the top.  I attach a spare pipe to the top rad and manually blow the remaining water out of the system.

To refill I simply place the disconnected pipe into a container with half a bottle of ek cryofuel and about 600ml water. I use the spare pipe to suck the new mix back into the system. Once I see mix in the spare tube (which is clear) I remove the spare and reconnect the main pipe. I then turn the pump on very low and open the res cap and top the system up using a syringe with a small flexible pipe at the end. I will get a small amount of cavitation on the day of the fill but it usually only takes about 2 days to get all the air out and I have no cavitation.

The whole refill process excluding the top-up period only takes me about 15 mins from power off to back up and running.

As for the rear rad there is no room because of the fans and pipe attachments. You would have to lose rad space from one of the other rads so it's simply a trade-off, but you would have more parts and more points of failure.

Read that wrong. Res not rad.

I wouldn't mount the res up the top. Very little room and added risk when filling. I made one mistake once and turned my pump off with the res cap off. A bit of water came out the top of the res. It went harmlessly out the bottom of my case. I have since attached a small extension to the res inlet so that shouldn't ever be a problem again. FYI I made the extension by drilling a hole in one of the plastic rad bungs that come with the new rads and jamming a small tube into it, then screwed it into the inside of the res top (which you can just see inside the top of the res). This means that water coming into the res goes past any air gap at the top of the res so it doesn't draw any air from the top and create cavitaion.

One more note. I tried to run 3 fans of one fan header. There is no problem with the max draw but starting can be problematic and sometimes one fan won't spin. It can't even be manually started once the others are spinning. The top rad running 2 fans on one header has never been a problem. I had to get a cheap fan hub to power the front rad fans.

If you want some more info on squeezing the pump res combo into the bottom let me know. It is a tight fit.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

Don't forget to tag or quote in your reply if you want me to know you've answered or have another question.

I also have the nzxt on the back of the chassis to light up the corner, chassis is the thermaltake p3 and a 7 inch raspberry pi screen for temp stats running cam

Edit: Nevermind, I just saw read the rest of the post which mentions the P3.
