1080/1440p Gaming on a 4k monitor?

Marothgar

I recently fell in love with the Samsung 590d 4k monitor and as I usually spend my time content producing (Premiere/AE/C4D) I think its the right monitor for me. However, I do enjoy gaming in my downtime and the 60hz refresh will do me fine (My current monitor is 59hz) my MSI GTX770 just wont handle 4k gaming so I want to know what the experience is like gaming @1080p on a 4k display? I know that running far below a monitors resolution isn't great, but I hope it will do. Thanks!

Ive been told that 4k downscales to 1080p pretty well but not 1440p

You may find benefits in a 21-9 monitor if you haven't looked at them already

1080p will translate well onto a "UHD 4k" 3840x2160 display, but not as well on a "True 4k" 4096 x 2160 display

the UHD displays have exactly 4x the pixels so it will translate well.

1080p Scales perfectly on that monitor. You can try 1440p but it'll be interpolated so it might not look as sharp as 1080p.
