R9 290 getting out performed by my gtx 770

What? GPU's are made to be at 100% for as long as the user needs, performance degradation will not happen, the silicon will simply stop working.

well maybe the card is bad,no idea. but its not a coincidence that its a miner card

If the card was that worn out, I doubt it will only be slower. I'd expect artifacting and crashing too if that was the case.

And that would most likely cause graphical flaws if some transistors are rendered inoperable. If a card gets messed up, it won't just get slower.

 

Also that whole voltage locking thing on the 600 series cards is bullshit. Look at the 770. They were artificially holding those older cards back.

They don't "get slower", if they're not working, they crash or artifact. End of story

 

Oh yes they DO wear out, just like cpus. If you run them at full load 24/7 with poor airflow for months they will start dying and performing worse.

Silicon is not like your pet hamster you had as a kid. It's inanimate and doesn't get tired. It runs or it doesn't work right ie: artifacting, crashing, ect.

I mined for 6 months, my 7950 still perform as good as new, except it was covered with dust.

You are comparing a reference and a Lighting? ofcourse the lightning will be faster, it is OC and has way better cooling allowing it to perform better, but the reference cooler is basically crap, even if your case has great airflow, the reference cooler is not enough

i just benchmarked with heaven benchmark and it stomped my 770 so its just in games i guess:/

maybe they were running it overclocked and over volt-ed all this time. Over voltage can degrade the GPU.

 

 

They can wear out and they will. The VRMs have been pushed to their limits and are breaking. Gaming GPUs are not meant to be run 24/7.

Some games just prefer Nvidia cards.  That is the only thing I can think of.  Your CPU is not going to bottleneck that card.

Maybe the turbo boost is turned off?  Not clocked high?  Also, the 770 Lightning is on another level, benchmarks often use reference cards or stock speeds, the Lightning is neither.  A properly OC'd 770 can come close to touching a 780.

Whatever the reason, the fact remains that something is wrong with his R9 290 run.....it should be easily faster than the GTX770 in many games, winning some by a good margin, others perhaps by not very much. That the TS has a GTX770 Lightning should alter our R9 290 vs GTX770 mindset a little, but doesn't negate the fact that the R9 290 should be winning. I looked at the Anandtech review of the R9 290 where it was pitted against the GTX770, and it wins in just about every gaming benchmark, some by a significant margin I might add. Something is definitely wonky.....

How much RAM do you have and what kind of hard drive are you using? Also, I had issues with my old AMD GPUs that were all caused by driver install problems. You might want to think about doing a clean install of windows. I switched from nvidia to AMD last summer and I used ccleaner and a variety of other driver cleaners and that screwed up my registry and gave me crap performance, all of which was fixed with a reinstall of windows.

While the reference 290 is hot and loud, it does a great job of removing the heat created from the case which is a huge plus for some. My case doesn't have great airflow but, things stay nice and cool because almost all of the heat created by the 250w monster is thrown out the back. Well worth the noise I can't hear over my headphones while gaming.

TS hasn't mentioned CUDA, so it doesn't matter to him. As for temps, well, comparing the 'cooler' temps on the GTX770 against ab reference R9 290 isn't fair as they are two different levels of performance. The temps of the R9 290 should, instead, be compared to those on the GTX780 whereas the GTX770 temps should be compared to the R9 280X instead. Besides, this refrain about the R9 290 series high temps is moot due to the availability of 3rd party cooled R9 290 cards.

Did you accidentally enabled AA in Catalyst Control? Try return CCC to factory setting.

What is your GPU usage and core clock while gaming? Use MSI Afterburner OSD to check.

Did you accidentally enabled AA in Catalyst Control? Try return CCC to factory setting.

ive only touched overdrive in CCC and my gpu usage is 100% at 1137 core clock and 1400 mem clocl

he hasn't mentioned it I was generalizing in my original 290vs770 comp, they are two different levels of performance but on the similar level of cost and therefore very comparable. This is a 290vs770 thread sir if you don't wanna compare them this isn't the thread for you... TS did say he has a reference 290 and also dude I did specify after market 290s in my original comp
