Build-Off Week 35: EVGA + Razer [Brand-Themed Build]

Do we need a monitor? Speakers/Headphones? Please clarify.

Got the answer. Apparently, I can't read.

CPU:  Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($179.99 @ Microcenter)
CPU Cooler:  EVGA ACX mITX 46.5 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($39.99 @ Microcenter)
Motherboard:  EVGA 111-IB-E692-KR Mini ITX LGA1155 Motherboard  ($149.98 @ OutletPC)
Memory:  Kingston Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card:  EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card  ($189.99 @ Microcenter)
Headphones:  Razer Carcharias Headset  ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $992.40
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-03-07 17:09 EST-0500)

Justification:
IDK how anyone can get a motherboard for 0 dollars, so I decided to sidegrade to a 3570K and the EVGA Stinger Z77 vs a 4670K and a Stinger Z87. The lower temperatures should facilitate a greater overclock with the EVGA ACX mITX cooler.

8GB of Kingston Black RAM will match the motherboard perfectly and provide plenty of performance.

Storage was, unfortunately, a compromise, as the graphics card takes up too much of the budget, removing the possibility of an SSD Though, the Hitachi 1TB hard drive will perform nicely and have space for games.

Speaking of graphics cards, the EVGA GTX 660 is a wonderful card, and will overclock well with its aftermarket cooler. Also, it is faster than the 750 Ti.

In terms of a case, the EVGA Hadron is small, but can still hold high performance components, providing plenty of power to the overclocked 3570K  and GTX 660.

For peripherals, the BlackWidow Tournament Edition is still mechanical, and a Razer Abyssus and Carcharias round out the trio.

In all, it is a very balanced build that will look just as good as it performs.

CPU Cooler:  EVGA ACX mITX 46.5 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($39.99 @ Microcenter)

Video Card:  EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card  ($189.99 @ Microcenter)
Headphones:  Razer Carcharias Headset  ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Keyboard:  Razer BlackWidow Wired Gaming Keyboard  ($90.00 @ Mechanical Keyboards)
Mouse:  Razer DeathAdder Wired Optical Mouse  ($47.50 @ Amazon)
Total: $992.66
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-03-07 16:37 EST-0500)

I'll probably still be editing it, but I have gaming performance and usability in mind, I could've probably fit the nice EVGA motherboard along with a K series CPU in there, but that won't get you more frames, an EVGA GTX 660 (more powerful than 750ti) on the other hand will! Also a nice 120gb SSD for OS / games along with a 1tb HDD for mass storage. Pretty cool little setup IMO ;)

I would also like the answers to ilikemacandpc's question's.

"M. Aronnax." replied the Canadian, "your arguments are rotten at the foundation. You speak in the future, 'We shall be there! we shall be here!' I speak in the present, 'We are here, and we must profit by it.'"

Do we need a monitor? Speakers/Headphones? Please clarify.

And I would also like the answers to ilikemacandpc's question's.

From the OP:

Peripherals: Yes

Monitor: No

So no monitor, but you do need speakers/headphones, a keyboard, and a mouse.

Very slightly over, but I'm assuming that's acceptable.

Had to compromise a lot, but we'll see what the voters think.

Alright, I'll edit the post.

Yeah I didn't notice that audio requirement until I'd already one it. Frankly I'm not even going to bother. If I change something I'll get the "eww not a mechanical keyboard?!"

What can I say, we both know what a truly good build is!

Though I must say. Your RAM choices confuse me. ;)

Yeah, I would personally just go with my original build because it actually wasn't bad, and it might've been a decent small form factor budget build. As for the RAM, I just realized that when changing modules, I forgot to remove one of them. But this at least means that I can go back to a 4670k.

You're so close to being able to squeeze in that 8gb too! Like the price of a Starbucks coffee off! Personally, I think this build should have had a $1100 or even $1050 budget, with the demand of a headset.

The price to performance suffers here.

4gb isn't enough. I have 4gb and constantly run into issues.

PCPartPicker part list

*Edit hahaha you want headphones or speakers in with that? What a restrictive budget or such demands. <_<

Some challenges are harder than others. From what I can tell, it is doable, but you will have to make compromises. If it gets to the point where the budget won't let people diversify at all (only one or two configs meet the criteria), then I can remove the headphone/speaker requirement this week.

It looks fine. Try not to write inside the quote because it's hard to read. I didn't realize what you had typed until I read it a second time.

It is because of the sale on EVGA's website. The sale was valid when I posted it, but it has (sadly) ended now. :(

According to the rules of the contest, my build would still (theoretically) stand.

I thought I changed the price of the Hadron air to $300? (it was easier to look at it that way)

Fack.... I forgot to change the Hadron's price. Time to re-evaluate the budget :(
