Freeze when ALT + TAB on a Fullscreen game

Menelwen

Hi,

Since I formated my PC I have an un-fixable freeze that forces me to Force Reboot via the Reboot button on my case.

It happens every time I'm on a Fullscreen video game, it both happens with games that runs very well that with games that runs bad.
Of course, switching to Borderless or Windowed would probably fix the issue but I have a low-end computer so I'd like to save all the ressources possible for the video game I'm playing.

I'm on the latest version of Windows, drivers updated.

Ideas? Thanks ! 👋

Well on League of Legends I can go well over 80 but on a game like Destiny 2, I struggle to keep 60fps and can go even lower to 30 or 25.

But like I said, it's the whole PC freezing, and it happens both on very good running games that lows too so.. yea..

I am unsure the Monitor is the right direction, I really recently changed my monitor, and my issue was happening both before and after the new one.

Same resolution on both game and desktop? What GPU and what game?

For League I have 1280x768 and for Destiny 2 I run with 1280x1024, both having that issue.

GPU : AMD Radeon HD 7900
CPU : i5-3570K 3.40GHz
RAM : 8Gb

And desktop? The freeze comes because Windows has to switch resolution and GPU can't keep up. It might be also bug with drivers. So if you are using latest, roll back few versions.

Well it happens with both resolutions so that might not be it... I formatted again to be sure nothing went wrong the last time, can't say if that fixed it yet.

For the GPU Drivers I tried both old drivers and latest, nothing changed.

You mean you have tested it with desktop resolution matching the resolution in-games? Do you see any spikes in GPU usage, or VRAM? Does it crash regardless of what is going on in games? Like on menu's too?

I havent checked the graphs, thats a super idea. I will keep an eye on my graphs and check if I get spikes.

I havent crashed yet on a Fullscreen app, only on games.

It seems like after my new format, I havent got any crash yet.

Not trying to call the karma but it seems to be fixed... for now.

I will post a new answer only if It is back. thanks for help ^^

Hi, sadly I have sad updates,

the issue is back, I got a few crashes but I didnt came back here in case they wont stay here.. but they do..

I tried to play in Windowed, and I still get crashes ! What the hell !?

I suspect being a GPU driver issue, I tried uninstall it, tried old drivers, tried latest drivers, nothing changes...

That might be cause my GPU is just simply dying (its pretty old and have been really used in the past before I get my hands on my PC) so yeah... is there something I can do to check the health of my GPU?

Thanks !

Update : I just got a blue screen, error code : System_service_exception,

Everytime I got crashes or errors codes in games, they're linked everytime to Drivers in general, this blue screen too.

My GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series (yes, yikes, its old).

Can I get a link to be sure I dont install bad drivers (again?)

Thanks ! ^^

I'd recommend trying with another GPU if that's possible. At this point you would need to use years old drivers. I haven't had AMD GPU for some 15 years, so I don't have first hand experience. With Nvidia they only support two latest gens with drivers. So if one has older GPU, updating drivers don't have any benefits. I haven't upgraded drivers for 2 years I've been running Win10.
