Looking For Chair

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hey all,

I'm finally upgrading from my crappy Ikea chair and am looking for a new chair to replace it.

Requirements:

 - Ergonomic

 - Has headrest

 - Preferably Black in colour

 - Between £200-250

I had been looking at some SecretLab chairs, but they are slightly out of my budget and I'm not sure of their quality, ergonomics, etc.

Thanks in Advance!

Have you considered a BeautyRest? They are office-style (so, non-gamer design), but they come in solid black and dark grey, and look really great and are exceptionally sturdy.  I just replaced my last BeautyRest (which served me for over 15 years!) with a new one for less than ~$300.  Something like in this family.

Racer style or standard office looking mesh chair?

Edit: if racer style, I love mine from ewin gaming. Look for the one with 4d arm rests

Ergonomic chair is way higher than 250$, you can check jaytwocents for that matter. I use anda seat dark Knight. It's 220-270€ and i am really happy for my choice. I don't know if it's a global brand

Second hand Humanscale Freedom. Much comfier and better made than gaming chairs. Thirteen hundred quid a pop new but frequently available in eBay under £300.

That depends on the brand you go with.

You're thinking of a particular brand that's overpriced.

I'd rather not check Jay out ever again with his dumb biased testing and poor testing methodology.   But, several brands make ergonomic chairs other than Herman Miller for a quarter of the price.

Or, as mentioned before, you can go with a refurbished one. Most of the companies reupholster so it's not even like you'll be sitting on someone else's gonad sweat.

The seller I bought my Humanscale from had Aerons and Mirra 2s at around £250. Not sure what the rules are on linking but happy to send a PM with their website, they're also UK based. Mine came in 3 days and is absolutely mint except for some very minor scratches on the legs.

TLDR: Used Herman Miller Aeron.

Be sure to get the right size for your body(A, B, C are small, medium, large respectively - see link for details). I've been using these at work and at home off/on for almost 10 years now. New is going to be over 1000GBP. Used might be 250ish if prices are comparable to the US.

The headrest for these is expensive but I've found that generic $15ish kits that you'd need to "hack" on places like amazon (with reviews showing how they did it) and lightly used $30 kits on places like ebay.

This will usually do a MUCH better job than a "gamer" chair. The "elite" and expensive office chairs are overpriced new but they're fair deals used and you can sell them for what you paid.

Ideally you'd also check out a few OTHER alternatives as well and maybe try them for a week. This isn't always doable so... yeah, Aeron, in the right size (do a search on sizing first) and adjust it to your body.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/reviewedcom/2019/10/16/best-office-chairs-2019-our-favorite-ergonomic-desk-chairs/3994680002/

----

I strongly suggest not focusing on comfort but rather "ergonomics" or "sitting duration". If a chair is TOO comfortable your posture will relax and you'll end up with spinal damage.

I also suggest getting up every so often, walking, doing light exercise, stretching, etc. A lot of places say to set a time or a routing. I gave up on that. I just drink a BUNCH of water and every time I get up to use the restroom I get a walk and some exercise. This admittedly worked better at work than at home (bathroom is MUCH closer).

quasi-related: diet, sleep and exercise matter too. A less ideal chair if you're sitting at 150-200lbs (assuming average male height and bone structure) will be better than the "ideal" chair if you're sitting at 400lbs. Anecdotally I feel better sitting down in the 140-170lbs range (when cutting weight - err doing nothing and just not eating that much) than I do in the 170-200lbs range (when bulking/trying to gain weight), even though I'm usually eating more and exercising more at the heavier weight ranges (think 10 miles of bicycling a day, 20 miles of running a week, 2-4 hours of weight lifting, metric boatload of vegetables and meat - at that time I had free facebook/airbnb/google/linkedin/etc. all you can eat cafeteria food) be aware that bulky weight lifter type at 200lbs (roughly where I was) is WAY different than "out of shape" at 200lbs. Same story for distance runner/swimmer physique at 140lbs vs skinny-fat.

I'm reasonably confident that my answer (Aeron in the right size) is "good enough". I highly doubt it'll be perfect or the best because everyone's body is a little different. As stated, the ideal would be "try 2-3 good chairs for a week" (see link above for alternatives). AVOID "gaming chairs" they're about where "gaming headphones" were a 10-15 years ago (overpriced, tacky gimmicks that don't actually work that well compared to professional/prosumer stuff bought at a discount).

Yeah this is a great suggestion, though understandably difficult given current circumstances. I know some people who hate stuff like Aerons, and from my perspective I much prefer the Humanscale Freedom especially from the perspective of the headrest design. If you want an off-the-shelf headrest option then I would also look at:

  • Autonomous ErgoChair
  • inSync 24 Hour
  • Eurotech Ergohuman

Couldn't agree more, they're absolute trash for the most part and ridiculously overpriced for the generally piss-poor quality of materials and construction.

Everybody's needs are different, including yours.

Go out and try loads of chairs, think about what you like and dislike when trying them out, go home and think about it for a bit, go out and try loads of chairs.

Rinse and repeat for as often as necessary.

It is all about what suits you, not what others think might suit you.
