Finally got myself a server

I finally bought myself a server to start messing around with. Its nothing special just a dell r410. And idk where to begin with it. I want to use it as some kind of NAS set up, maybe use it with some vms since I'm new to all of this. Where should I start? My main goal with this is to learn how to connect to it without having a keyboard and mouse connected to it.

Id put a hypervisor on it. THen you can easily run vms and do other things on it. Id look at proxmox, but there are other options like esxi, hyper-v, xcp-ng/xen server and others. 

 

Most of those have a web interface to manage the system, then connect to the vms. For remote access, SSH and rdp are the big ones.

Easy:

- Windows : enable remote desktop

- Linux : install and enable SSH / VNC

If you just want to connect remotely for now investigate connecting to the iDRAC utility. This will enable you to remote into the desktop and even the BIOS.

 

For an OS I'd also second using a hypervisor if you just want to learn and explore.

Ha how loud is yours mine wants to launch outta the rack its so loud like a jet my R710 is tolerable. Proxmox in my opinion has the shortest learning curve once you've worked with that and got down some of the networking/server lingo and control then consider moving on to some of the other options out there

honestly if all you want to figure out for now is connecting remotely and setting stuff up that way you are probably better of with a simple raspberry pi.

Once you know this stuff by testing the heck out of it on the Pi and you have actual things you want to run on a server that need more power you can move over to the bigger server.
