I'd think it would suit a decent little budget rig. It's not super duper powerful, but it's definitely viable for gaming.

For those who cant afford the newer 6 cores, sure.

A few weeks ago I would have said yes, but now there is an updated version of the 1600 (dubbed 1600AF) for $85, which is almost identical to the 2600.

There are no bad products, only bad prices.

 

a 1600 is still a decent CPU, but depends on the price. >100$? Not worth it.

70-100$? Decent deal, but the 1600AF is better.

<70$? Great deal, you can still probably OC the 1600 to 3.9 or 4.0 ghz, and it'll still have great potential for future upgrading.

AF? Yes, AFAIK the best "bang for buck". Original one? No, unless you get one hell of a deal (like 50USD) or AF not being viable in your region.
