HWInfo shows SSD at 1.0% Drive Remaining Life

Hello,

 

HWInfo64 shows on my SSD:

  • Drive Remaining Life: 1.0%
  • Drive Warning: Yes
  • Warning Remaining Life: 1

I bought the drive 2012-01-02 and is used as my main drive for Windows

 

Should i get concerned it will die in soon?

What does Samsung Magician say?

 

And the age alone would make me a bit concerned.

Samsung Magician just says Good, 30°C,Diagnostic Scan is not supported

In terms of flash endurance it looks perfectly fine. I'm guessing what's flagging it is the B1 value - the wear leveling count, which tends to go from 100 to 0. Your raw value is very high but I find it hard to believe your P/E is anywhere near what that suggests (4,527). Although even if it's accurate I wouldn't worry because that MLC is usually good for several times that in practice. If that count is accurate it suggests a write amplification factor of 12.8 (normal consumer is 1.5-2.0) which can happen in rare cases when machines don't sleep/hibernate properly...over many years.

I personally only trust Crystal Disk Info and vendor specific SMART tools like Samsung Magician in this case. All others were always super unreliable. At 45TB writes, it should never be at 1% already. These drives have way higher TBW rating. Nothing else seems to stand out either. If you don't really see any noticeable problems, it's a false alarm.

yep the B1 4527 P/E  wear leveling count is the culprit. 

Thre avarenge P/E should be around 354.4 P/E , but if you had the SSD filled the wear leveling algorithm coudn't work, hence worst NAND cell had 12 time more P/E cycles then the rest...

That myth needs to die. Controllers can physically shift existing data, they are not confined to empty space only. How much empty space has pretty much no effect on wear. Unless you do hundreds of gigabytes of writes in one day, every day, not giving controller any time to do wear leveling. Otherwise they shift cold data from fresh cells to those getting worn out regularly and that's how it solves it. You need to leave PC on over night here and there so TRIM and controller do their magic.

it's not a myth, it's the only variable, that have real impact on wear leveling. The old MLC SSD didn't refresh data as the newer TLC and QLC SSD do, becouse of that, ther's not much data jugling in the backround, so there's no other variable that could cause that.

 

I have samsung 830 128GB too, and on my SSD, the difference between the average P/E and worst is 2.86

It can still do it, it just takes longer, obviously. It's like moving a truck in a packed parking lot or in an empty one. You'll get it out eventually, it'll just take longer on a packed one. It's not much different with SSD's that are more filled. Controller just needs more time to move data around.

 

And frankly, that warning is a bogus one if you ask me...
