We need more info. Want wireless? If so, Bluetooth or a USB dongle or whatever? Open-back or closed-back?

Go a store and try some out, or order a bunch and return the ones you don't like.

I mean considering all OP would (hopefully) be doing is just opening the boxes and, if he doesn't like the headphones, putting them back in with all the original packaging, I'm not sure what's so wasteful here. Can't Amazon or whoever still sell them as open box?

They're still used. Depending on where he buys them from, they'll simply be discarded for possible sanitary reasons.

If it's a small shop, they might be able to mark it as open box and resell them, at a loss. Some stores simply refuse to do this as they can claim it and they don't lose out on a higher priced sale. Stores, especially Amazon, often just discard. They don't have the time to make sure everything's there, that they work as they should, and they're clean.

On-ear headphones are horrible, i would stay away and only get over-ear. On-ear will cause ear fatigue, they put pressure on your ears and you can hear your heart-rates.

DAC/AMPs:

Klipsch Heritage Headphone Amplifier

Headphones: Klipsch Heritage HP-3 Walnut, Meze 109 Pro, Beyerdynamic Amiron Home, Amiron Wireless Copper, Tygr 300R, DT880 600ohm Manufaktur, T90, Fidelio X2HR

CPU: Intel 4770, GPU: Asus RTX3080 TUF Gaming OC, Mobo: MSI Z87-G45, RAM: DDR3 16GB G.Skill, PC Case: Fractal Design R4 Black non-iglass, Monitor: BenQ GW2280

TBH, over-ear headphones are never truly “over-ear”. They kinda pinch the ears, one way or another. I personally find the Skullcandy Grind or Grados to be more comfortable than most “over ear” headphones. Because they exert even pressure on the ears.

Koss KSC75. Very cheap and very good, but no noise isolation if that is necessary.

The wire on these things is so fragile that mine lasted 2 months until the headphone jack gave up. With that in mind, these are some of the most expensive headphones I ever owned. Ditto with the Porta Pro.
