What’s the difference between GDDR6 vram and HBM2?

I saw AMD cards like the Radeon VII have something called HBM2 memory whereas Nvidia cards like mine have GDDR6 vram but what’s the difference?

 

Is HBM2 better? Or faster?

No HBM2 is how memory talks to the processor in AMD cards, both cards use GDDR6 vram.

No it isn't...HBM2 is High Bandwidth Memory, a type of RAM built right on the GPU core whereas standard VRAM is off-chip on the PCB....

So would you say HBM2 is faster than GDDR6 since it’s on the GPU itself?

HBM2 is faster, but MUCH more expensive. Thats why for gaming the recent HBM cards (Vega, namely) aren't very price competitive because I am not aware of a single game that leverages GPU compute to the point of the memory bandwidth mattering that much.

Faster yes.  But it really doesn't matter anymore cos nobody uses HBM, not since AMD dumped that idea years ago.  Too expensive.
