Does G-Sync matter?

DoritosDestroyer

Hey guys, so I'm putting together a new build, and I've purchased everything except a new monitor (still rocking a Samsung T260HD 1920x1200, about 10 years old).

I'm having a real tough time deciding what to buy. Specifically, I'll be running an RTX 2080, and I'm wondering if buying a G-sync compatible monitor even matters at this point. I recently read in a few articles that thanks to a recent update, you can enable G-sync on essentially ANY AMD Freesync monitor.

Is there any truth to these claims? Is G-Sync really that great? I've never had a G-sync monitor, my current setup has V-sync as an option, which I generally disable because it seems to negatively effect response-time in FPS games. Here's a link to one of the articles, for reference:

https://www.techspot.com/article/1779-freesync-and-nvidia-geforce/

Aside from G-Sync, I'm still unsure what monitor to buy. Here's my "wish-list" - if anyone knows of a decent panel that ticks all these boxes, please share!

27" (or bigger, ultra-wide OK)

2K minimum resolution

144hz or higher

1-4ms GTG response time

HDR would be nice, even if it's just HDR10 or VESA400 certified

IPS panel*

10-bit color (for color-critical work)

90% or higher DCI-P3 coverage, 100% or higher sRGB

*I could be talked out of IPS.

Newly finished build for 2019:

  • Core i9 9900KF
  • EVGA RTX 2080 Black
  • Gigabyte Aorus Pro Wifi
  • G.Skill Trident Z 32GB (2x16) 3200mhz 16cl DDR4 memory
  • ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB Gen3x4 PCIe M.2
  • Corsair RM850x PSU

Look at you, ticking all my boxes and stuffs. That panel is currently at the top of my list. I've contemplated going for an ultrawide or perhaps looking for something a bit bigger. Still deciding since it's really tough to find a panel that covers all my requests. Definitely interested in hearing what everyone else is using, though.

And of course, still curious about G-sync in-general Even if I buy a g-sync monitor, I'd still like to know if it even matters at this point.

I have the panel myself and after I bought it, it was g sync compatible certified. Has run with G sync since day one without issues. Any questions please ask
