Need to replace my daily driver (PC)

Donut417

The machine I was using for Plex is wanting to die. So my current daily driver will become a Plex server. SO I need a new daily dirver. Im on the fence about building a desktop or buying a laptop. I would like to use this machine in bed, but I could also buy a cheap ass Chromebook for this purpose.

What Im looking for:

  • Screen: IPS 12-14 Inches (If Laptop)
  • Ram: 16 Gigs
  • CPU: Quadcore?
  • Support for 2 external 1080p screens
  • Linux or MacOS
  • SSD 256 Gig + (I have a Samsung 860 Evo in my current daily driver, as Im installing Linux and Plex on it, I might not use this SSD for the server, so it could be open to use in a new machine)

Mainly this machine will be used for Youtube and surfing the Internet. I figure if I decide to get back in to PC gaming, Ill build me something at that time. I need something reasonably fast and its probably going to be used for 4-6 years. I mean my current desktop is like over 6 years old and still going strong.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Look at a business laptop. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon or the HP EliteBook 745 G5

I’m going to look at the two options above when I get home. But any thoughts on the Mac Mini? I’d go MacBook Pro but it seem Apple has a lot of QA issues with their mobile line up. I can just get a Chromebook for my mobile needs.

@DrMacintosh Thoughts? Are Mac Mini's any Good? I thought about the Macbook pro, but with all the recalls and issues that Apple doesnt seem to be addressing, Im kinda on the fence. Though I never hear too many bitch about QA issues on the desktops.

I mean, Mac Minis are fine for non-3D workloads. You have to know why you need/want a Mac Mini to get one imo.

Surfing the Internet, Watching Youtube and other video sites. I need something Non Windows. Lets just say Windows 10 failed me for the last time. I even though about the iMac.

Well, the iMacs are better value since they all have dGPUs except the base model (which you shouldn’t buy) and built in speakers and a 4K display for only a few hundred more.

Only get a Mac mini if you need the small form factor or don’t want to be tied to the built in iMac Display.
