Question on splitting ethernet connections

Earn

Hey Guys,

So I routed a long ethernet cord into my room a while back, but am looking to hook up multiple devices to ethernet within this space. I was looking into buying an ethernet switch but forgot that I had an extra router sitting around. My current modem is one of those 2 in 1's that are able to function to provide wifi, so that's where my ethernet is currently connected. I'm not interested in setting up a new wifi hotspot in my room, and just want to use the router to split my ethernet connections, is this possible? If not, I would probably just buy an ethernet switch, but I hear that you need to plug it into a router and not the modem. If my modem functions as both a modem and a router, will it work if I connect my switch to it?

Thanks,

-Earn

You can use your existing router if it supports this functionality (Most do but some cheap end ones dont), you would also not use the "internet" port on the extra router, but plug it into one of the LAN ports, you would need to configure the router to not act as a gateway but as a switch.

Look though this, ignore the part about a crossover cable tho, those arent needed https://www.wikihow.tech/Use-a-Router-As-a-Switchhttps://www.wikihow.tech/Use-a-Router-As-a-Switch

I bought this to extend the lan connections in my room. It plugs into the ethernet on the wall.

Just turn off DHCP on the router and it should work fine as a switch.  Just don't use the WAN port, only the LAN ports.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7
