ddr2 board revival

spydyt

Trying to figure out if I can revive this beat up ddr2 board from the dead and get it to play modern games at medium or even high graphics doesnt matter the cost I just want to get this machine to work lol the motherboard is a ABIT KN9 SLI, ddr2, and it has potential but one idk if the ram upgrade to 8gb would be enough, I would like to see if we can put 16gb in it or more? max 32 of course. and I know to most people they probably don't ever want to see a ddr2 board playing games like a boss but I would be up for the challenge to make this possible. yes upgrade everything will probably need a 750 watt  psu but worth it lol!

well. i guess it's possible, but if you;re going for a ddr2 board. most likely you're gonna be stuck with old processors, such as the core2duo, quad, and maybe 1st gen i processors.

edit

i didnt see that it was an AMD board. hahaha.

post your updates here too. im curious myself

It's an AMD board....

AM2 format to be specific.

ABIT KN9 SLI

The board came out in 2006, 12 years ago, with standard caps, no guarantees it even boots any more.

The max CPU is an Athlon 64 X2 which won't get you anywhere you need to be.

With 8GB DDR2 ram the max. PC2-6400 at that...

You'd spend more money trying to track down the ram and old CPU, than you would buying something even a few years newer.

I'm normally all about pushing old hardware past its design spec, but there comes a point in time where it's simply a lost cause.

Looking around, the Athlon 64 x2 5000+ is probably your best bet, and an equally ancient C2Q Q9400 blows it out of the water in every possible way. Both procs on eBay can be had for under 10$

Try Windows 7.
2006 was Windows XP/early Vista era.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

Windows 7 will work perfectly fine.

If you want even lighter, try Windows 2003 which will work with drivers for Windows 7.

As for memory, you'd be stuck on 8 GB of memory... can't do more with that board.

Also not really much sense in upgrading and buying stuff for that.

But it might not be stable...

I'd say update the bios, but isn't Abit out of business?

It's also possible that at the time the board was made, either 4GB sticks of ddr2 weren't (widely) available, or insanely expensive, so Abit just said 8 was the max.

I still see to this day HP systems notably, exceed max ram without issues.

correct but I am sure I could find the most recent abit bios to install it onto a flash but then I am lost as far as updating the bios goes only cause my knowledge only goes so far but I could look into how to update or flash the bios to get it running properly. I'll be looking into it and hopefully I can get something out of it. Ill keep you all posted.

Given the age of the board, it might not support updating from USB, you may have to go floppy disk....

good luck

No the motherboard doesnt support overclocking I donot think... and as for the computer I threw two 470s in sli and I am having tech issues with it now for some reason one of the 470s have a different mhz than the other one... 639 from one and 601 from the other..

I know that this is an old thread. But if you google for "Abit KN9 SLI" and "16 GB RAM", this is the first relevant. To make it clear: Yes, it is possible to run this mainboard with 16GB DDR2, split to 4x 4GB in dual channel. But it can't run more than 10GB RAM at 800MHZ, that crashes. So 16GB need to run at 667MHZ. I use Samsung RAM bought from ebay/China for 15€ per kit. It runs stable for more than one month now. At this moment the KN9 SLI is used as my daily mainboard, because the newer AM4 board is broken. Windows 10 runs flawless, but slow.
