Tardbarn got a reaction from Kaasgeelheid in Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 2 vs. Noctua NH-D14
Hi there, I have both coolers you have mentioned. I switched to the Be Quiet cooler for aesthetic reasons.
The thermals for the Be Quiet cooler are better, but by only about 1-2 degrees. The sound is very similar, both ship with fantastic fans, however I have noticed the noctua fans have a SLIGHTLY more noticeable motor noise when you under-volt the fans.

The mounting mechanisms are the biggest difference, the Noctua cooler is much easier to install. If you get the Be Quiet cooler I would heavily recommend taking out the motherboard tray, or if that's not possible, the motherboard entirely. You have to screw in the cooler from the backplate rather than on the CPU socket side, it makes things slightly more tricky.

But that will cause 15-20 minutes of mild frustration, if you don't plan on removing the cooler frequently and like the aesthetics of the Be Quiet fan more, I would strongly suggest you go with it over the Noctua cooler.

If you have any more questions please ask, I've wasted so much  money on cooling and I'd hate for other people to unnecessarily go through the same ordeal.

In terms of installation, the Noctua NH-D14 gets my vote. In terms of looks, the Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 2....now if only the looks of the Dark Rock Pro 2 and the easy installation of the NH-D14 could be combined.... :D

No problem my friend. You'll be fine then, I have a Creative Sound Blaster Zx in the top slot. The middle fan clip on the Dark Rock Pro 2 touches it, but wrapping it up in electrical tape solved that problem.

Oh one more thing, my motherboard is an Asus Sabertooth z77, I don't know if all boards are the same with their CPU socket placement. That may also be a consideration.

I j recently upgraded to the case and you will still be able to fit a card in the top pci slot. Just make sure to wrap up the clip on the heatsink in electric tape so you don't get a short. The clip will most likely touch a card mounted in that slot.

Some of the issues that GoodBytes have mentioned are exactly the reason why I decided to go for a Dell U2713HM instead of one of the cheaper A- IPS panels. I simply am not willing to take the risk of getting a monitor that may work for a couple weeks/months/whatever and then have problems become noticeable. Not to say that the Dell monitor won't have problems or that the A- Korean IPS monitors will have problems, but the warranties are very different. For some people, myself included, they see the value of paying a few extra hundred dollars and getting a great warranty (like the one dell has) not to mention the different inputs, height/pivot/swivel, USB ports, etc.

I really hope these monitors work out for you guys and if they do, you'll have tons of extra money to spend on games :D

Yeah, it's a shame, I wanted to get a Be Quiet PSU but went for a Corsair one instead because of the individually sleeved cables they sell. Hopefully they will get better cabling in their next generation of PSU's.

You should be fine going with a Noctua NH-D14 or Dark Rock Pro 2. I can run them both passively WHILE gaming and be under the TJ Max for my 3570K, only by 10-15 degrees though. If it's a HTPC you'll be using it with, you'll be fine running passively or at very low RPM.

I don't regret anything, even the mistakes I've made along the way with building my computer this time around (been building PC's since I was about 13 years old and I still make mistakes). I just take it as part of the constant learning experience. Just plan as much you can, ask as many questions (good thing you are here) and figure out, as best you can, what you need from your PC and in turn what your PC will need in order to give you that experience.

Best of luck, you won't regret it if you take the time you need in order to get the build you need.

I've used my Noctua NH-D14 as a passive cooler for a while with my 3570K at 4.1 GHz. It worked fine, temps got around 85-90C in prime. I would go with something like that instead if it will fit in your current rig. Also, if you can control your fans, it makes things very nice. i run my system entirely passive (except for my GPU's) until my MB temps reach certain thresholds.

Well I doubt the performance is going to be anything special. Maybe 5fps over a 680 which isn't anything noticeable anyways.

I own a Dark rock Pro 2, and it is awesome, a bit big though. ;)
Temps are 36c idle, and 67 during 100% load, and this is on a 3570k @4.2ghz.

I use a PVC one with only an inch of padding but that one looks kinky :D actually interesting as well didn't see it when I got mine. I didn't like the foam only ones, too soft for me. Good to know I'm not the only one who actually knows about them, they are a cheap massage.

When I stopped and gave this a bit of thought, i realized that making fun of him doesn't make sense. Point out inaccuracies, sure, but attacking him doesn't do anything positive. This is how people get alienated which I'm pretty sure it exactly what we, as PC gamers, DO NOT want.
I was right there with everyone making fun of him, but realized that it's not productive to do so.

So he overspent on his case and he mispronounced a couple of brand names. So what? His PC is actually pretty nice (apart from the case) and he at least appears to be able to justify why he bought all of his components. He's also managed to OC his CPU to a decent level and set up 2 RAID arrays which is beyond the realms of most beginners.

Also, I hate to drop this on some of you, but for most people DNS and Hyperthreading are complex topics. He's playing to his audience of console players who don't necessarily follow PC technology.

Just to clarify, I've never heard of the guy before in my life and I haven't watched any other of his videos. Even so, he seems to be far less ignorant than some people, even on this forum.
