I used to have a 580 and it did weird things like this also, but never caused any problems, could try reseating the GPU and making sure the power cables are fully seated

Possible but you mentioned running stress tests and playing games with no issues, try running the stress tests again with HWinfo running and see if there are any big droops in the 12v,5v and 3v, these can cause all kinds of havoc without presenting obvious symptoms

had plenty of rx cards exhibit the same issues on splash/boot screen but worked perfectly other than that, you could check your cards bios make sure its not a modded/mining bios, but given the number of rx I have had with similar issues I would not be concerned

I would not have any concerns, I would if I had never encountered it before like you, but as I said I had a lot of the rx versions show this anomaly.
Why it happens I don't know it could be how it interacts with the motherboard bios/monitor/cable or anything.
I used to buy hundreds of rx5 series from a mining farm a few years back to sell on when they were upgrading, so I have literaly tested hundreds of rx cards and say 1 in 50 or so would display what looks like artifacting of some sort during flash screen, similar to yours but also many variations, sometimes a bright purple screen and so on, but all of those cards worked perfectly, and I never had any other issues with them.

Hope that puts your mind at ease

A known bug in Windows 8 and 10 can cause a search loop that can be the cause of your high disk usage. To temporarily stop the Windows Search facility and see if it improves your disk issue, open an admin prompt and enter the command: net.exe stop “Windows search”. This will stop Windows search from running until the next time Windows is restarted.

If it turns out that Windows Search was responsible for your Windows 10 disk usage reaching 100%, you can disable it permanently by following this procedure:
Press the Windows key + R, enter services.msc and hit Enter. The services window will open. Select the Windows Search entry and double-click it to update its properties. Select Disabled under Startup type and then OK to save your changes.

As long as you're not playing games or doing anything graphically intensive, the load on your GPU will be negligible. If I understand it correctly, you're basically asking for a laptop feature called NVIDIA Optimus, where the iGPU is used to save battery life. Honestly, just use your regular graphics card and don't worry about it.

If you're trying to get video out from your iGPU then just plug your HDMI/Displayport or whichever cable, into the motherboard itself and not the graphics card.

I would agree but given the upgrade of a 2010 machine and the request for more storage I don't know that a large 2tb SSD is in the budget so I was mentioning both

Yeah but overclocking a GT 640 and other cards like it usually doesn't give you any real improvements. Still worth a try.

If you install Win10 on the M.2 drive, the installer will detect a previous OS install on it. It'll ask what it should do, select 'use whole disk' (or something similarly named) so it'll completely purge Linux from the M.2 drive.

    Ok so make bootable drive,
boot to windows on the m.2,
plug in hdd Copy important stuff then wipe,
then how do I get rid of Linux permanently from the m.2 or will it write over it or what?

Unless you stick with Windows 7 (still a perfectly fine choice for an older pc), you should go with at least 120 GB, ideally 240 GB.

120 GB is absolute minimum for Windows ... SSDs with less than 120 GB will basically use bottom of the barrel flash memory chips and will use 1 or 2 flash channels instead of all 4 or 8 the ssd controller supports... so it's like single stick of ram vs using 2 memory sticks in dual channel mode ... the more "channels" the ssd used, the higher the speeds and IOPS... a 60 GB ssd will have shitty speeds and also shitty endurance

VenomRaptor17 reacted to mariushm in is it ok to get a 60gb ssd
60 GB is not enough for Windows 10 .. every time there's gonna be a few windows updates, the process will use at least 5-10 GB of free disk space to complete, so you'll always have to keep at least 5-10 GB of free disk space, otherwise Windows will not work right ... you will experience hiccups like randomly mouse pausing for half a second, or applications taking a few seconds to start and so on
SSDs also use the free unused space to spread data across various flash memory cells and reduce wear and tear of the memory cells, so it's always best to have at least around 5-10%  (so for a 60 GB drive, that would be at least around 3-6 GB) unused to reduce the wear out of the cheap SSD.
A 60GB SSD will have a lifetime write counter of around 40-50 TB ... if you use it almost full all the time, the maximum amount will probably go down to around 30-40 TB.

So after you install Windows on the SSD, you'll only have around 20-30 GB of disk space you could actually use for games or applications ... and these days, that's not enough for a big game that would benefit from using SSDs.

so get at least a 120 GB SSD.

If you want more performance (faster WIndows startup, launching programs faster) install Windows on the SSD.

@Drama Lama @sub68 @Kanna @Electronic Wizardry @lenardmgtr @Void Master @Charlie Groves i am using it for boot drive and ALSO IS IT BETTER IF I BOOT THE PC IN A SEA GATE HARD DRIVE AND KEEP THE 60 FOR GAMES OR STRAIGHT GO FOR A 120 GIG
