For DisplayPort, it's inherent to the design. For HDMI it can be designed either way. If yours is designed to disconnect on power off on HDMI too, that's unfortunate. It's common on TVs but usually not on monitors. Anyway, all the 1440p 144 Hz monitors that I know of don't do this on HDMI, only DisplayPort.

4K models are out of your price range, except the last-gen 42" and 48" models.

If you want to stick with regular monitor sizes, you still have the choice between 27" 1440p 240Hz and 34" 1440p 175Hz ultrawide models. What's more important to you, ultrawide or higher refresh rate?

It basically comes down to these two models:
    Alienware AW3423DWF 34.2" 3440 x 1440 165 Hz Curved Monitor (AW3423DWF) - PCPartPicker
    Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM 26.5" 2560 x 1440 240 Hz Monitor (90LM08Q0-B01AB0) - PCPartPicker

It's different for every person. As strange as it sounds there are people who can't even tell the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz.

But there are basically 3 aspects that change with the refresh rate, all of which have been tested by YouTubers and reviewers:

Blind tests done by JayzTwoCents showed they could all reliably tell the difference between 60 and 120, but between 120 and 240 they were just guessing. They were basically only looking at motion smoothness though.

In terms of input lag, LTT measured a very noticeable upgrade in player performance from 60 to 144, but not a big upgrade to 240. So to get a big advantage out of 240 Hz you will need the skill to back it up. The monitor won't magically make you better. More casual players like Pauls Hardware couldn't get much out of 240Hz, but Shroud certainly could.

In terms of motion clarity, the monitor in question needs the response times to back the refresh rate up. For example an OLED using 240Hz is roughly comparable to slower LCDs that run 360Hz. A 360Hz OLED is roughly comparable to slower LCDs running 540Hz and so on.

If the response times are a tad too slow, you won't get better motion clarity. You still get the lower input lag coming from a higher refresh rate though.

If you paid for a streaming service you didnt pay for any perpetual use.
If you paid for a book, you did not pay for an audio book.
If you paid for a book you did not pay for a different version of the book.
If you paid for a MP3 album you did not pay for CD quality album.
If your streaming service of choice has not paid for the license to distribute a piece of media in your area. You did NOT pay for it either.

    Etc, etc, etc.

You have the right to strip/digitize your copy of a thing and do whatever you want with your copy. you dont have a right to OTHER copies. you only paid for yours.

You probably won't notice much of a difference when you upgrade. With these things, you usually notice the difference after you get used to it and then downgrade again.

I went from 144Hz to 240Hz and it wasn't that big of a difference. Then again, I don't play competitive games anymore. After trying the 240Hz monitor for a few days, I changed my mind and went with a 120Hz OLED, and for my personal use, the slower refresh rate doesn't make much of a difference. However, the better picture quality and HDR definitely do make a difference.

In the end, the types of games you play are the most important factor in how much you can get out of higher refresh rates. Can you reliably hit >200 FPS in the games you play? If yes, then it can make a lot of sense.

Despite what most VPNs promise, even basic things like bypassing geo-blocks don't work most of the time. Netflix, for example, knows it's going through a VPN and will simply stop working until you turn it off.

Since I don't sail the seven seas or buy weapons-grade uranium on a daily basis, and I don't use public WiFi, I don't see much use for one anyway.

Funny how this is still the #1 marketing point every VPN makes. Isn't that basically just false advertising, and if it is, why doesn't anyone crack down on it?

They can barely put together a few lines of working code on their own in-house engine. What do you think would happen if they had to learn a new one?

Skyrim still relies on unofficial patches (mods) to fix basic bugs in the main game. The game is from 2011 and has received multiple refreshes over the years. Even for the refreshes, that included paid DLC, they relied on mods to provide the content they sold.

Bethesda had some good ideas with games in the past and created a good baseline for the modders to improve upon. But they have always been technically incompetent as far back as I can remember.

i think the opposite actually, you'd want it on a low range card as every little bit of performance can help.

dlss doesn't take resources it *gives* you more headroom as it lowers quality  = hence gives you more performance.

Glad you like your OLED monitor. I've been using the LG C2 42" for 2 years now and my experience has been pretty smooth so far. Even though it's only 120Hz, it's more than responsive enough for my more casual gaming needs. Not to mention, my 3080 is mostly just hovering around 60-90 fps anyway since it's 4K. Even though my model only has a peak brightness of around 650 nits, it still has an amazing HDR experience with true blacks. I love seeing how much attention OLED panels are getting in monitors these days, and I hope there will be more improvements before it's time to upgrade again. There is still room for improvement in terms of full-screen brightness, text clarity and VRR flicker. But even with these minor issues, OLED delivers a better gaming experience than any other display technology.

I'd strongly suggest sticking with Elden Ring.  Rip around a bit and try to beat Margit, 73% of players have and you can use that as motivation to not be in the 27% that couldn't.  Once you learn how the game works a bit you'll go for long periods between bosses without dying.

If you want story though the current best is Baldurs Gate 3.

You can also hold shift while clicking on the restart button, then the PC reboots into troubleshooting mode where you can click "advanced startup" and "enter UEFI/BIOS/firmware". After you select it, the PC reboots again and goes directly into the BIOS. You can get around the timed button mashing this way.

    Glossy hands down.

If you havnt ever seen a Gloss finish panel on a suitably high contrast display, like a good VA panel LCD, OLED, Plasma, or CRT, then you really dont know what your missing.

Even on the best high contrast displays, a Matt finish will reduce contrast, and black will no longer look as black as it should.

The drawback, reflections, sharp bright reflections.

But, if your the kind of person who is really into displays, you will already have the environment adjusted to account for the type of display your using. So reflections shouldn't be a problem.

Ofc, if the panel itself is total crap, the final coating used is irrelevant. Sure a glossy finish may look less crap than a Matt one, but its still crap.

They just screwed up by offering a "includes all future DLC" bundle in the first place. That was destined to bite them in the ass (cash flow wise) no matter what. Especially when making such a niche game with a limited reach and potential player base. They have created a situation where they can only lose in the long run.

Their customers have every right to be upset. When the developers changed the deal and suddenly decided that the next piece of content wasn't going to be included, they actually broke the law. It's simply false advertising at that point.

It's not the customer's responsibility to think about the developer's cash flow. And ultimately, it is the developer's responsibility to offer a value incentive to get a potential customer to give them money. It is insane to me how high on copium some of their customers are that they actually try to justify this ugly behavior and find reasons why they have to pay more money.

Frankly, the only way I can see this going through is either to refund the difference in price between the regular version of the game and the "all included" version at the time of purchase, or to refund the entire purchase, depending on the customer's choice. Otherwise I see a class action lawsuit with similar demands coming their way.

OLED ensures you will have the best possible image quality and motion performance in most situations. Unless you're doing your daily work on the same monitor, the risk of burn in should be negligible.

When I was a teenager, F2P games were my lifeblood. I didn't have any money, so these games were the only ones I could really play. Nowadays I'm disgusted and lose interest in any game at the slightest hint of pay2win or pay4convenience. Because at that point the developers are actively incentivized to make the game less convenient, more grindy, or generally worse for the people who don't pay.
