100,000+ cases per day, 1400+ deaths per day ... at 328 millions and an average daily infection of 100,000 people, heard immunity (if it was real and possible), would take 8.9 years, and that would be 4,592,000 million dead (at an average of 1400 per day).

Meganter reacted to Eschew in Do optical switches feel like mechanical switches?
Hey there. Just popped in here for a bit of fact-checking. 😉
C3 Tangerine switches are linear switches -- not clicky switches. You can find more info about them over at TheKey.Company's product page.

Apologies, OP, I've no firsthand experience with optical switches so I can't comment much on them. Did a bit of digging, and found some Interweb articles on the optical switch experience, take them as you will:
How good are optical switches? (Reddit Post) Optical Switches vs Mechanical? (Reddit Post) Optical vs Mechanical Keyboards: Which is Better? on Switch And Click. Note that if you choose an optical switch keyboard like the GK61, you won't be able to swap in any sort of mechanical switches -- Kailh BOX Jades/Navys/Whites, C3 Tangerines, etc. -- and you might be stuck with only Gateron Optical switches for choices.

For $60, however, there are plenty of mechanical keyboard options on the market. DIERYA and Womier do offer compact 60% keebs at that price point, IIRC. 🤔

Hello  I put together a low budget workstation for concept artist (2d preproduction digital artist), and I'm gonna use it soon to challenge some professional mates that have huge powerful rigs \m/ Components: -Pi 4B/ 8gb , OC cpu 2Ghz gpu 750 -Ice tower cooler, no thermal pads, yes thermal paste !! OS: -Raspberri Pi OS 64 Softwear Installed: - Blender 2.79b - Gimp Additional hardware I found around: - Wacom intuos pro medium. - Monitor ASUS art bla bla bla - Keyboard Logitec G910 (cost more then the Pi4b^^) - Mouse Logitec G5 (I use those components I had around on my garage, very easy to replace them with other cheaper components you can find second hand) Everything run smooth and the system is stable. The temperature even if cpu and gpu are OC thanks to the ICE tower cooler and the use of thermal paste instead of the pads are low even under "heavy workload" (never above 45C). Gimp is very snappy and the brushes pressure sensitivity work very well. Blender work just fine as a support for your 2d art and run perfectly for learning proposes (beginner). This can be the ideal solution for many parents that see some kind of interest on visual art on their kids or for people that have very limited budget.

Meganter reacted to kelvinhall05 in The Pinephone experience
Hi guys. As some of you may know, my Pinephone came in today (as of writing this thread). I purchased the Manjaro edition with the dock which cost me (after being screwed over with shipping and taxes/import fees) about 370 CAD, or about 277 USD. Keep in mind that the base phone excluding any extra accessories or costs is only 150 USD.

Day one was fairly uneventful. Unboxing was fun, the box had a nice design on it, and everything felt quite good and premium for a budget phone.
The phone came with the dock I ordered, which is pretty damn nice with a metal case and decent selection of IO (USB C passthrough, likely just for power, 2x USB-A, ethernet, and HDMI), as well as a fairly average USB-C cable. It came with a preinstalled screen protector, which I will leave on as I'm worried about the texture of the glass and how smooth it will be (I've heard conflicting reports on how nice it is to touch).

Taking the back off (to remove the plastic covering the battery contacts) we find the bank of dipswitches for toggling the following:

    1. Modem
    2. Wifi/Bluetooth
    3. Microphone
    4. Rear camera (and flash, surprisingly)
    5. Front camera
    6. Headphone jack (I believe this is because it can be used as a serial interface, but don't quote me on that)

There are also some pogo pins that can be used for expansion or accessories, as well as the stacked SIM and SD card slots. The battery is removeable, and is compatible with some Samsung batteries (I forget which).
Powering up the device, we get a Manjaro logo (as expected, since this is the Manjaro edition) and what look suspiciously like a Windows loading circle.
While it is nice to have a preinstalled OS, man, it really chugs hard. I pretty much immediately switched to my SD card preloaded with a mashup of several different OSes to choose from. It was fun messing around with these too, but I also found them to be quite slow and unusable.

I eventually switched to a pre-built Arch image which feels exponentially faster and snappier than any of the previous OSes I tried. I have already run into some minor problems with x86 stuff not running on arm (as expected), but I'll figure that out later.

So yeah. That's where I'm at now. I'll slowly get this Arch install up and running, and/or reinstall completely fresh to the internal eMMC. Either way, I'll update this thread as I do various things with this phone. Looking forward to documenting my journey, thanks!

Obviously it'll take time to get used to, but even just messing around with it this morning, I'm enjoying it. Don't really have any specific feedback other than a suggestion to consider changing "author" in threads to LTT orange instead of the blue it is now. At least in dark theme, it's a little hard to see.

Other than that, great job guys. I can see the effort that was put into this and I'm really loving it.

The GMMK is a keyboard that is either pre-built or barebones made by PC Gaming Race. If you want something plug and play though, that's totally fair.

It's a great keyboard as far as reviews indicate though enthusiasts will probably disagree. If you go that route, there are two versions. MX Speed switches are similar to Cherry MX Reds but with a higher actuation point. There is an optical-mechanical version too which on average should be more reliable/durable to prolonged use than the Cherry MX Speed variant.

And that's precisely the problem! People will shell out big bucks for a keyboard that cuts corners everywhere and will be absolutely destroyed by a custom (or GMMK "custom") of the same total price.

Look, if you want to go drop $300 on something with $10 keycaps, shit switches, extremely average build quality, etc, be my guest. But you asked for advice and are now ignoring it, so...
