JovanD got a reaction from Tetras in PSU recommendation needed!
750w is enough, but 850w might be less loud on equal load.
Are you looking at PSUs from same model series?
-
JovanD reacted to Dedayog in Is This Power Supply Any Good?
Not sure how paying $250 for a PSU is future proofing when you could pay $125 or less for what you need, and if you have to buy another $125 in another 10 years... This PSU won't last you any longer than a cheaper one.
You're just paying a shitload now for no benefit. Not exactly what I would do and that term needs to die.

JovanD got a reaction from filpo in Dear Linus: Let's talk about Apple Vision Pro Price
Can we talk about how it's cheaper than a HoloLens 2?
I don't see the fuss about the price, it's in the name Apple Vision Pro
Although that word got used so much in consumer marketing that people got desensitized to it, but than again Apple's marketing material seem to indicate it's a consumer device.
I kinda don't blame them though since Microsoft already has sunk decently deep roots in commercial/industrial segment with HoloLens and Meta is dominating the gaming segment, so my guess is Apple just went with "Lifesytyle device".
My guess is during the long 16 year development somewhere in the beginning it was meant to be an commercial/enterprise device, but it got steered in many directions along the way, so we ended up with a device with commercial pricing and specs, but consumer marketing material.

Linus is basically a hypocrite because ragging on Apple gets his fanboys hard regardless of the merits of the product itself.

This is some wild parasocial rambling. You may want to evaluate why you are so invested with the opinions of one random dude on the internet that you’ve written a short story to ask him about it.

JovanD reacted to 8tg in Ryzen 9 or x2 Xeon E5 2699 v3?
Take into account the benefits of faster DDR5 versus very slow DDR4, modern nvme ssds, pcie 4.0/5.0, etc
For pure performance if literally all that mattered was multicore, its still only a maybe because of how volatile those x99 boards are in general.
I would save up money and look at the 7900x, youll get more benefits out of a simply newer platform than dual socket C220 board.

JovanD reacted to ReidOnly in Is there any successor to the legendary Cooler Master HAF XB EVO?
Regrettably, the beloved "CUBE PC" aesthetic has become a rarity, as most case manufacturers have shifted away from it. I personally share the sentiment of missing it dearly, and nowadays, enthusiasts often find themselves compelled to modify their cases to accommodate modern features like USB-C and 3.2 Gen 2 USB A ports. In my basement, I currently have approximately six cases adorned with the cherished aesthetic, patiently anticipating the day when a local enthusiast expresses interest in customizing them!

JovanD got a reaction from WhitetailAni in What's the oldest possible phone you can watch youtube on?
Yup, maybe i should have used the word "get video playback" instead of "watch", im a bit puzzled since i never thought watch means watch and enjoy looking at it 🤣.
Also there is no such thing as minimum resolution for being able to comfortably watch video because our perception of image quality is dependent also on how big and how far away the screen is.
So for example a small 480p screen can look like it has better image quality than a giant 1080p screen that is too close.
For VR 1080p is just horrible, it feel like 80p on normal screen 🤣
Also type of screen, subpixel arrangement and shape play a role in image quality perception, although that's mostly relevant for VR headsets.
Interesting thing about 480p (and generally lower res content) will look better on a CRT screen than on LCD because of the way electron beam works and the way light scatters on that phosphor grid it creates sort of a mechanical upscaling/anti-aliasing, gamers who grew up in PS1 days will know what im talking about.

JovanD reacted to WhitetailAni in What's the oldest possible phone you can watch youtube on?
That's nice... but that's not the question. The question is "what is the oldest possible phone you can watch YouTube on". No qualifications on resolution or anything.

JovanD reacted to da na in What's the oldest possible phone you can watch youtube on?
That's like saying your computer can only run a video game if you play on Ultra
-
JovanD reacted to WiscoMetro in What's the oldest possible phone you can watch youtube on?
As a user of a Nokia C7 from late 2010, yes it can play youtube but its very borderline. And unlike mentioned above 1080p is NOT required, this phone has a 360x640 display and it grabs and plays the 360p variant just fine. Works on Lumia 640 LTE from 2015 too, and that has a 720x1280 display. 1080p is NOT a requirement 😄 !
How does a 13 year old phone manage that? So, Opera mobile can still load youtube, after clicking past the request to update your browser. Then wait 5-10 minutes for it to struggle to very brokenly render it, until you get the download mp4 prompt which you can then watch in the video player. With 256 MB of RAM and a 680 MHz 130nm process CPU!
But only unmonetized videos, otherwise it'll instead download the ad(which you can watch) but you'll never get a prompt to get the actual video afterwards.

JovanD got a reaction from da na in What's the oldest possible phone you can watch youtube on?
Is 1080p really a requirement for video to play?

No, I doubt it will ever exist. 16:10 is basically dead now.

JovanD reacted to vsteel in A full refrigerant cooling loop?
Those motors won't hold up. To cool a CPU like you are thinking you need something like:
https://www.chromaus.com/product_Cobra_Temperature_Forcing_System.php
If you are not using something very industrial it won't hold up to the constant running and heat load dissipation. Source, this is some of the stuff I do for a living in the semiconductor space.

JovanD got a reaction from BlackMoustache in Should I Consider Replacing My PSU After 13 Years?
Im just wondering how is the fan still alive after 13 years, that's usually how PSU's die, the fan dies first, than it overheats and blows like a grenade.
Good quality capacitors can last +20 years if kept cool. Also living in an area where power grid company does it's job right helps too.
Maybe just replace the fan and you should be good to go, or if you have some know-how see if you can re-lubricate it's bearings just to be safe.

JovanD reacted to Somerandomtechyboi in A full refrigerant cooling loop?
It was pretty popular a decade or 2 ago with commercial systems like the prometia mach ii gt
imo not really worth it till you get way down in temps, hence why id rather a cascade phase change system or a phase change system that uses the joule thomson effect, you can do some serious ocs at -100c
not to mention the cpu itself seems to draw less power for a given voltage/freq at those low temps so the colder the better since its a positive feedback loop
Id totally build one if i had the money, 6ghz+ allcore or even 7ghz allcore for daily sounds fun
If you are going into impracticality atleast make it give some good results not some pathetic sub ambient shit that a watcerchiller can do
gas leak?
I dont really see how youd clean a gas leak up, but maybe an oil leak
Yes costs more and absolutely annihilates custom loop since you can hit subzero temps
even if you build a performance oriented loop with a massive car radiator which would be a ton cheaper, maybe sheer heat dissipation capability would be better but theres only so much you can do for die to cooler heat transfer
if were talking performance
Air cooler -> aio -> car radiator loop -> phase cooler
Normal custom loops are aesthetic focused, a minor upgrade from an aio, and absolutely annihilated by a car radiator loop which tend to be much cheaper

JovanD got a reaction from salair54 in Power Supplies not made in China or Taiwan? (AKA Western-Made Power Supplies?)
I think this boutique insanity might fit the description considering it's probably hand made and considering the simplicity of linear power supplies it could be possible that components are in house too, but i got no info on that.

JovanD reacted to aledsav1 in A full refrigerant cooling loop?
I am pretty sure every possible cooling solution has been previously tried, I used to do extreme cooling well over a decade ago, peltiers, phase...it was only for overclocking purposes (serious overclocking) and involved silicon spraying the motherboard and covering with neoprene to address the build up of ice.

JovanD got a reaction from Somerandomtechyboi in Diy powerbank
You are correct, you would also need a "buck-boost" converter and prefferably one with feedback, but for a phone charger USB powerbank you don't need to do that, there are already ready made boards that have BMS and voltage regulation all in one, like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002920082149.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.57.22a016724YgvJS&algo_pvid=9243dd28-562a-4adf-8d68-af1ed2aa9121&algo_exp_id=9243dd28-562a-4adf-8d68-af1ed2aa9121-28&pdp_npi=4%40dis!RSD!934.84!795.12!!!61.57!!%402103205116987213373131573ea661!12000022797985378!sea!SRB!932882428!&curPageLogUid=a35Ohv9zmIWX
