Epic Wink reacted to Pickles von Brine in Ahaha, That's hot - Quantum computing saves hundreds of thousands by being hotter
You will never see quantum computers running at room temp. There is too much "noise" from all the vibration of the atoms around it. A bunch of other oddities as well. The key to quantum computer cooling is to use the cooling to reduce the "noise". It also limits to amount of vibration in your quibits as well. Otherwise, there is too much energy in the system for it to work right. Cooling to 1K is a lot easier than cooling to a few hundredths K.  Still expensive, still hard and still cryogenic, but that is what you have to deal with. The fact they can account for the extra noise and whatnot is impressive.

Epic Wink reacted to Silverfields in Cloudflare terminate 8Chan
I've been reading a lot of the same opinion, the whole "Get rid of 4chan/8chan, and the issue is solved!".

Getting rid of the site that hosts the content/nasty people will only make the next site(s) they flock to even harder to penetrate/get rid of. The platform isn't the issue here, its the people that use the platform.

To that end, what needs a serious look is mental health. We need to isolate the root causes of why these people end up doing these horrific acts.

I personally think that these people feel they have nothing to live for, so they're much easier to goad into being a martyr for "the cause", whatever that ends up being. A lack of relationships(not just romantic), an oppressive feeling that everything is against them, and the ease of access to weapons certainly also contribute to the eventual decline in these people's mental state.

On the topic of Cloudflare deciding to remove its services from 8chan, I imagine that this is a public image move.

"Recent mass shooter used 8chan, and Cloudflare protects their website!!!" isn't a good look. While politics likely did have a factor in this, I don't think they were the major factor that caused this action.

Epic Wink reacted to GoodBytes in Amazon calling Microsoft bait and switch over cloud pricing
Working with AWS, I can tell you they also vary prices every now and then.
It is called competition. In the end, both AWS and Azure have their strength and weaknesses, and the price differences, is often not a concern for companies using a cloud system but rather its abilities.

    A simple example is: coverage.
Azure has data centers at that "odd place" places that Amazon doesn't have. Like the recently opened South Africa one.
However, Amazon data centers are much larger and can carry heavier loads.

So depending on your needs, you don't have much of a choice, regardless of price.

Epic Wink reacted to Sauron in Valve going to end official support for Ubuntu starting from 19.10
Arch hasn't supported 32bit libraries out of the box for years.

It's almost as though this doesn't actually mean you can't run 32 bit software if you really need to.
But... there already was no reason to use Ubuntu over Windows if all you care about are the games.
You can still play half life because it's statically linked. 32bit binaries will still be compatible with Ubuntu as long as they aren't dynamically linked to libraries that will no longer be available.
There has never been unless you preferred its UI, default features and release model - plus the couple of highly specific frameworks that only work well on Ubuntu, e.g. ROS, but that's not what we're talking about here (I don't remember if ROS uses 32 bit libraries but people who use it are mostly still on 16.04 anyway).
I don't think we should chase popularity in exchange for progress. Windows is a trash heap in large part due to its retrocompatibility constraints.

Haveibeenpwned is reporting the largest data breach they've listed, with over 770 million unique email addresses breached. The breach is known as "Collection #1" and was allegedly discovered on a popular hacking website and uploaded to Mega. The list is a compilation of breached email addresses along with multiple different passwords used on thousands of different websites. The collection of emails and passwords is over 87GB in size.

    Key points:

Another day, another data breach. Don't really have much thoughts on this but felt it should get some attention due to the size. If you're concerned if any your accounts have been compromised you can go to http://haveibeenpwned.com to check your email address.

“The levels and duration of exposure to RFR were much greater than what people experience with even the highest level of cell phone use, and exposed the rodents’ whole bodies. So, these findings should not be directly extrapolated to human cell phone usage,” said John Bucher, Ph.D., NTP senior scientist. “We note, however, that the tumors we saw in these studies are similar to tumors previously reported in some studies of frequent cell phone users.” (Emphasis is mine) https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/high-exposure-radiofrequency-radiation-linked-tumor-activity-male-rats

Epic Wink got a reaction from Lurick in Intel admits they're likely going to lose server market share to AMDs Epyc through 2018
As a software developer, there would have to be a huge incentive for me to go off intel. A lot of the developer community would have to make a great push to support AMD, even though they use the same instruction set. Things like JavaScript and (pure) Python shouldn't be too much of an issue, but there is an insane amount of precompiled libraries out there (which I use everyday) which have too many issues with non-Intel. This is ultimately the biggest roadblock AMD will have
