A few things to note if you build with the P5: the Thermaltake PCIe riser cables are unstable as hell and often simply relax out of a decent connection, even after days... Time will only tell what this may do to my cards but so far tests show no damage despite a particularly rough training period. Unfortunately, the PCIe brackets would not immediately fit the other PCIe riser cables I bought, and the TT cables are the only ones, available to me, that are actually long enough.

    Thanks

Sorry, if you were hoping less and simpler tubing, I went totally the other way  I wanted to have fun making strange loops and interesting (though geometrically clean) shapes. I could have used a fraction of the tube and even used an SLI block on the SSDs but that would have been nowhere near as interesting to me.

Putting that 'strange loop' in was the most satisfying part of the whole build and it is one of my favourite elements lol

Each to their own and all but yeh, you were destined to be annoyed by my excessive tubing

What do you think of the way the black water turned out?

or, if you mean: I could have brought the GPU out front. The PCIe cables are not long enough for that and I didn't want to hide the 750s behind the 980.

It was actually snapped pretty much right through and all floppy. Thankfully I have the 950 and was going to use that any way (lower power, smaller, more VRAM) but that 580 was a legend among 580s. A Giga XOC. They were stupid expensive and had more power phases than most modern motherboards. But there was nothing I could do about it so yeah man, suck it up. Then like a dildo I threw it out with the trash completely forgetting that there was nearly 3lbs of copper there. Doh. Mind you I am at that point again where I have too much junk and 3lbs of copper wasn't anything compared to my lovely lady lol. She would have had my guts for garters

So the only other thing I really needed to test before filling it with water was the radiator. Another enormously kind gesture meant I could go and see the doctor. Let me introduce you to Dr Drop.

Now the website says to put up to 0.5 into the rad (8.7 PSI) but I was a little worried with this rad being quite old and having damage on the fins. So I decided instead on 0.3 bar because the pump I have could not deliver any more than that any way due to the layout. It kept leaning on the release nipple.

I also did not want to just walk away and forget about the amount of pressure in there either so I sat and stared into space for ten minutes. Lo and behold, no pressure drop.

    Phew.

The radiator bolts came today also, so I can get them on and buttoned up. I have also completely changed the design of the rig too. Instead of using that radiator stand I am just going to rivet a 360 fan grille onto the front of the rig. Firstly it will allow me to mount the rad and fans right onto the front of the rig (gaining me about 10mm in space) and secondly there was pretty much no way to bolt the rad stand down and then assemble it. I could assemble it but then I could not get to the bolts, and after three days of trying to think of a solution I just gave up

Just a note on PPTP VPNs, they're not really secure. The MS-CHAPv2 protocol that they very frequently use for authentication is no longer secure and even Microsoft themselves recommends the use of a different VPN protocol. While PPTP may be fine for normal, everyday, home use, if you need to access confidential or sensitive data please do not use PPTP. Your best option would be to use OpenVPN or L2TP/IPsec as they are far more secure than PPTP.

Legally, you've got quite a few options to license content from:
iTunes (music can be converted, videos are DRM locked to iDevices ONLY) Google Play Movies, Google Play Music (not sure if/how the DRM works) Whatever offering Microsoft has these days... Zune Video, right? Netflix, Hulu, H[o]BOGo, Vudu, Crackle, Spotify, CraveTV, Shomi, etc. (streaming only) Disney, BestBuy, Movie Theatres, etc. offer some kind of digital download service if I recall? As for whether or not your service of choice actually has the content you wish to license, well, that's a whole other question.

This is actually the main reason I still acquire content using legal grey-area methods - for example, downloading a show instead of PVR'ing it.
I happily pay for Spotify, Netflix, and have a Cable subscription with currently airing shows and re-runs available to me.

We do not, however, have a PVR/DVR and we have zero desire to pay our cable provider more money for something my PC should be capable of.
So, when we miss a currently airing show or re-run as it's broadcast live, I opt to 'illegally' download and watch it in order to follow the story.
As far as I'm concerned, it's the same thing as if I were to hookup an HDMI recorder between the cable box and our TV, or CAM the show on-screen.

I'd be more than happy to legally watch it through Netflix or on-demand at no extra charge through my cable provider.
Unfortunately, cable providers see streaming services as a threat and thus have invented their own streaming channels as other revenue streams.
While I understand cable providers needing profits, I'm not paying for a plethora of different streaming services, each with their own content libraries.

Online streaming services are an alternative to cable's annoyingly complicated and expensive packages and channel lineup.
Exclusive content on specific streaming networks is creating the exact same problem video streaming was meant to solve.

Yes, the drives will bottleneck 10gbps (1.25GB/s). The drives can saturate roughly gigabit ethernet. And it can be made cheaper if you would be okay with mATX rather than mITX. Although, I'm assuming this will be hidden but in a somewhat prominent area since you're getting an aftermarket cooler (presumably for noise).

What exactly will the NAS be used for? If you're already spending $800, maybe considering going with an i3 (for an extra $70) -- depending on your use case. Buying used is also a great way to save quite a bit of money (I got a 1230v2+supermicro X9SCM-F +32gb ecc for $350).

I would also upgrade to the CX450m (for $5 more) since it is a much better PSU.

Hey so i'm planning on creating a new NAS for myself. Here is my part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/sDX4sJ

Unfortunately it is a little overpriced for a NAS compared to maybe something like a WD cloud storage for $250. It'll be using freeNAS.
I plan on having this NAS share a 10 gigabit connection between it and my rig. I got the idea from this video here:

SO i'll be buying to 10 gigabit network cards such as the HP one included at the bottom and linking them through DA cables.

I have a few questions on this solution though. Wouldnt my 5400rpm drives be a bottleneck to the 10gigabit connection?

    Besides that, any suggestions? Thanks

While I agree with @Blade of Grass that PPTP is insecure, in this instance it's the perfect protocol. It's extremely easy to setup, it has very little overhead, and is supported by basically every OS/device out there. I have both PPTP and L2TP setup on my home router, but I use PPTP more often than L2TP simply because it's faster and I don't need security. A good example of when you want to use PPTP over OpenVPN/L2TP is streaming content. If I connect to a PPTP VPN I can stream Netflix in HD just fine but I'm limited to SD over L2TP (even if the latency is nearly the same). I tried about half a dozen different VPN servers (both with PPTP and L2TP installed, some even in the same state) and there was absolutely no way for me to stream Netflix in HD. Now of course this is just an example, but imagine if you want to stream your 1080p home movies off your NAS while you're at your grandparent's house? Stick with PPTP unless you don't trust their network.

This is a good option, but having it run on the router itself - if suitable - in my opinion is a better option, since the router is always connected, and can update the IP instantly. If your IP changes while your client PC is turned off, but say you're out on vacation and need to access some files, you won't be able to run home and turn the PC on. If you're running it on a PC that is never shut off, for example, a server, then that might work, but I personally tend to favour letting the Router handle it.

Unless you're looking to replace the 3770 because you need it for something else I think that it should be more than sufficient to handle the tasks mentioned, but building a big ass server from "real" Xeons is great fun too and will allow you to use ECC RAM when you get serious.
As for raid cards "To hardware raid or to software raid" I'd choose a software solution, however, that's a personal preference.

If I were in your shoes I'd keep your current hardware and use FreeNAS

jaisai reacted to Arvi89 in Best Choice for a home server
I have been using FreeNas for 18 months now, it's pretty awesome, really fast (the network is always the limit), but you need to be careful
First I built without ECC-RAM, no I kind of regret it (bad RAM is not that common, and few people actually reported losing all of their data because of bad RAM, but the risk is not null). I also made a raidz1 (raid 5) with 3 desktop HDD (seagate) of 3 TB, now I realize that was a bad idea. raid 5 is dangerous with big drive, you should use at least 2 parity drives today (so at least raodz2/raid 6), so at least 4 drives, but this is for any NAS you will build (not only FreeNas). Also I should have bought WD red HDD instead of cheap desktop HDD.

FreeNas is great but you can't increase the size of your raid. If you have like my a raid 5 with 3 HDD, the only solution is to move the data somewhere else and build a raid 6 (or I could build another raid 5 and have both of them together, but that would not solve the security issue, it would only be bigger).

Now, my NAS is 55% full, still working very well, but I will update it because I don't want to lose my data

I simplified a lot, you can read much more on their website if you are interested!

Get a used Dell 2900 for like $200 or so. I use one for a plex server and able to run a couple extra VM's at the same time. If you really want to use FreeNas, then the dell is actually a bad choice. I recommend ESXI with the 2900.

Aw yeah man, we are giving away one Polaris 10 video card and one Polaris 11 video card thanks to our good friends over at AMD.

    1. Post a comment below telling us what graphics card you're using in your rig and why you want an upgrade to AMD's Polaris lineup. The two winners will be selected at random, so no, the content of your comment doesn't REALLY matter, but this is more fun than seeing 800 posts of "I want it" or "gibe nao pls." One comment (entry) per user.

    2. Check back here in about a week when the names of our two winners will be added to the OP (giveaway execution is an art not a science people, so I apologize in advance if winners aren't announced in exactly one week).

    3. Check your inbox here on the forum to make sure you didn't miss it. Our winners' usernames will be added to the OP here, so if you have any question about the legitimacy of a congratulatory message regarding this giveaway, please be sure to check back here and see if your name has been added.
