The part where it is alleged LTT auctioned off a prototype water block they promised to return is troubling. That requires an official response.

For the large majority, GN is correct. The thing that sticks out to me has been the extremely large increase in * corrections. * this and * that. They need to let their foot off the gas a little. They're moving too fast and breaking things too quickly, catch my drift?

However, in my personal opinion, part of the video, in regard to sponsorship, seemed a bit more personally driven, rather than fact-based. But besides that, LTT needs to ensure accurate data. I will 100% back that.

Hopefully, Linus and LTT will take a moment to reflect before rushing to any statements or any off-handed remarks on the WAN show on Friday.

    @Chris_nz Your guess was right.
I just touched the heating radiator in my room. A second later, I jerked my hand away, because I was burned.
Heating temperature is raised, and the radiators in the room are not adjustable.
And the weather has become warmer today.
Because of this house is warm, even too much.
I still believe that there is a problem, but stress tests in such conditions will not achieve the relevant results.

I didnt know you could just update the chipset with a bios update?

but you would be onto something board may have newer chipsets for the new cpu. but from what ive read they should also be supported on the current chipsets as well - with a bios update

hence this may lower the prices on current boards

Chris_nz reacted to Mattias Edeslatt in When is a Ivy Bridge i7-4930k outdated?
Logically a system is outdated when it can't handle what you want to do. For some people that's every 2 years, for some people it's every 7 years and so on...

If you buy a for the time high end machine and in following years upgrade the graphics cards the system will hold up for many, many years. The raw performance in todays computing is on the graphics cards, not the CPU. For those who do tasks that multi threads  or use much RAM there is a benefit of upgrading due to more cores and larger amounts of RAM, for the most others a new graphics card every two to three generations is a more then enough upgrade for gaming and streaming/plex and so on.

OK at least that one has a heat shield maybe it can bring some performance gains. Mine just sucks in front of the wheel plastic shield so it can help but it's still a long path for air to travel.

I'd recommend sway bars (Whiteline is an AU company so the exchange rate + shipping might not be so horrid) above most things. A big front sway to dial out a lot of the understeer with a big rear sway to make the car actually rotate was the single biggest improvement I made on my Subaru. With the sways, the rear end would show up on occasion under spirited use.

Never handled like a BMW, but did handle way less econoboxy.

Heh. My brother has an E46 325i and I've got a bunch of E46 M3 spare parts (cluster, EWS, exhaust, etc) that I didn't use in my S54 E36 swap. Just need an engine and it'd be up and running. I had help on my swap from a friend who has E46 M3-ized TWO E46 sedans, so....I've got plenty of support to make it doable. Just stupid pricey, and the engine makes no torque. LS3 E46 wagon though, that'd be tits for a DD, and likely cheaper. WAY cheaper to run, that's for sure.

Before my 95 Legacy died, my plan was to EZ30R / EG33 swap it once I was done with school. I had kitted it out with AST coilovers, whiteline sways, and a bunch of other nice goodies....it was a very fun (slow) car. Handled better than expected at autox, track, and pre-ASTs, rally-x, and was a blast driving in the mountains to go skiing/snow hooning. I drove a friend's EG33 swapped GC and that thing was a blast.

I still miss that Leggy and want to build a proper H6 manual wagon someday. I've been tempted to build an E46 M3 wagon but I'm kinda over dealing with S54 projects.

Slowest car I've ever owned, but man, I miss it.

I'm hoping to get an old volvo 240 Estate when I turn 18 which will hopefully be a project car in the future, I know its not your average first car a 15 yr old would want but there's something about a sleeper volvo wagon which really pulls me lol. Besides it'd be perfect as I could fit all my friends in with skateboards, surfboards and all my camera equipment and even install a harness for rollers

Chris_nz reacted to DerBernd in To build or buy a NAS?
    To be exact:

For normal consumer use you can also use Windows (normal consumer grade like home, home premium or professional). Might be easier since you do not have to learn that much. I recall some problems with using teamviewer to administrate your nas-windows-machine without a monitor plugged in but that can be alleviated by using VNC (its free).

    Buying a NAS:
You can buy it with or without harddrives. Plugging them in is a piece of cake. The rest is kind of plug and play. You plug it in, search in your router for it's IP adress and get into the web interface, set the harddrives into the preferred RAID mode and then create some shares. Maybe setup some users with different shares and permissions. That's about it for the most basic use. Advanced features require you to study the handbook for a bit. You will have it up and running the evening on the day you get it, the more advanced features will take you about two to three additional evenings tops. A nas you buy will be lower in terms of power consumption. Around 5 watts powered on plus 4 watts per each hard drive. Little NAS systems tend to have a busy, small fan (80 or 92 mm) which can be louder than a PC.

    Building a NAS:
Screwing the PC together, setting up the hardware raid,  installing the OS, messing around with the energy savings options to prevent it from going into sleep mode, installing drivers, setting up network shares. Done. Will take you about half a day for a windows based system and about a week for a linux based thing. Power consumption wise you can get something like this down to sub 20 watts (like my machine). A well insulated case might be quieter than a bought NAS since your PSU will run near silent.

Advantages of Windows: You already know it
Advantages of Linux: free, Speed, immune to windows malware and great remote access possibilities

If you give your nas computer a permanent display you can also use it as a workstation for normal office stuff and browsing. No need to power up the power hungry gaming machine.

You can always buy a NAS. But since we do not know what the NAS has to do we cannot recommend one.

But I can give you some pointers to try out:
Get your hands on some harddrive (no specific NAS drive yet, just a spare harddrive you surely have somewhere around (external enclosure or something similar) or even a decently fast USB 3.0 stick. Slap the components into a case, plug it in and install some Ubuntu variant on it, I recommend Kubuntu (with the KDE desktop) or LXLE (Lubuntu variant) both have a windows-like desktop (unity of normal ubuntu is a mystery to me). Be sure to get the 14.04.1 LTS version (LTS = Long term support, support ends somewhen 2017).

Ubuntu has the advantage that you have good explanations on how to do stuff. Mostly just copy and paste. Experiment around with some Samba shares (they display as normal windows shares in your windows network) and try to get a handle on things. Once you are somewhat familiar with your linux distro you can plan on getting some more components (SSD for system, HDD's for a hardware RAID. Your RAID will depend on the amount of data and the required redundancy.

Or you could do freenas if you wanted to. I know nothing about freenas hence I cannot recommend it.
