Go for high refresh rates. 1080@144 will do you more than high res.

I prefer resolution to frame-rate since I'm an RTS and RPG player primarily. If you like shooters, you can go with a 144hz monitor instead.

I say pull your cpu, clean it,  slap some new thermal paste on in the "X" formation. My daughters heatsink on her comp got pulled off some(idk). She had the same heating temps with her 4790k.

With that cooler it should be idling around 35-40C. Sounds like bad thermal compound. The fact the temps don't change when gaming means it might be thermal throttling.

That's the one you'll want. The 1060/480 aren't significant enough upgrades and will underperform in newer titles.

For 144hz I would definitely go with the 1070.

That build looks great however since you're using a locked CPU you could get a lower end motherboard for almost half the price, and then you could get some slower ram and overclock (my rams at 2133Mhz, but is stock 1600Mhz.) it to save a few bucks. Also I personally recommend the GTX 960 for Geforce Experience, Driver Release Speed, and NVIDIA Gameworks.

A 4GB VRAM card would really help, but you aren't going to be able to find one from Nvidia in your price range. Are you okay with 2GB?

This actually just blew my mind, but my local tech store (Frys in this case) sells the 4170 and not the 4160. I don't use sites like Amazon, NCIX, etc. when it comes to computer components because of one DOA motherboard... It didn't end well for either side, but I'll take your advice and go with the 4170.

Also, I've decided that part of your wisdom comes from this line: Don't buy Razer Products and please, for the sake of my sanity do not buy anything from Mad Catz...

I plan for the unforeseen. Even then I still get burned. If it meant not getting a better GPU, then I'd say i3 too. But that's not the case. The i3 is a CPU meant for light duty, the i5 has the HP to take you further. Nether choice is a bad one.

It will last him two years regardless. He has no plans on upgrading? Why spend more when he'll see no tangible benefit from it?Also, because of its 4 threads, games restricting dual cores will run on an i3. Remember, he's pairing this with a GTX 950 which will never run every game great to begin with and spending more on an i5 just exaggerates the bottleneck of the 950 even further.

we'll have to wait and see but as OP said he wont be upgrading at all and the i5 is not way better, the i5 is double that of a pentium and the i3 sits about in the middle so its only about 50% better which in cpu's is not really much when they are both quite powerful

Well I... *blushes* But yeah, I suggest 950 and i3. Is it possible you could actually spend less money and get the 4170? They usually go for cheaper AFAIK and are .1 ghz faster lol
