LAwLz got a reaction from Godlygamer23 in Which router brand is reliable these days?
Whether or not your WiFi drops highly depends on a lot of factors. Where is the router located? What devices do you have connected to it? What is the radio environment like? And so on, and so forth.

You can't judge entire brands like that based on some anecdotal experience. For all we know, someone complaining about a brand being unreliable might have had a completely different model of router (I would argue the model matters far more than the brand), they might have put it inside a drawer so most of the signals get blocked, and they might have had plenty of neighbors with really wide channels, thus creating a very noisy environment. They might also have had unrealistic expectations like "why am I only getting 800Mbps download speeds when I should be getting 1000?". Basically no Wi-Fi router would do well in that scenario.

Meanwhile, someone telling you about a great experience might have had a really good model, had it in a great position, and been living somewhere where there is basically zero interference. On top of that the might only have used their Wi-Fi for really simple stuff like sending instant messages and email, things that aren't that sensitive to latency and don't require a lot of bandwidth. Even my old wireless-G router would be able to handle that scenario.

True, most of the time I hear people talking about nefarious stuff is decryption and whatnot but a backdoor that makes a device vulnerable on a home router isn't generally going to do much for standard DDoS attacks. Certain reflection/amplification based attacks can get away with it in a more stealthy manner but they aren't stealing someones credentials or anything for sure, not with the weak hardware the consumer stuff comes with, haha.

I'm not saying there aren't crappy code practices in firmware either but that's a completely different topic and definitely not limited to one company or region of companies 🙂

Its not like home user traffic is going to be remotely useful to the Chinese government, unless they targeted someone specifically.

I was thinking more like malware that could make the router part of a botnet, as I can't think of anything else that might be useful to China other than having consumer routers become part of a DDoS.

Of course you also have to weigh up the economic harm.  China relies on the rest of the world buying their hardware, so it would be a pretty dumb to destroy that market.

If there was something nefarious that could decrypt your TLS 1.2 and 1.3 traffic at or near line rate (which requires super expensive and powerful ASICs) and shoot it off to Chinese servers it wouldn't be in a home router either.

But yeah, sell it, if you need something in the future then buy something again then. It'll be cheaper/better.

Honestly your only answer is sell it really. You're worried about power consumption so that means it should just be off. Which means it will sit there so selling it will give you the most value. Piece by piece that is. Especially now that it's still worth a bit.

well almost anything you could feasibly do with it will be either offloading stuff from your desktop to it which means running both at the same time, or things that you want to run 24/7.
either of these use a lot of power so I'm not sure what else you had in mind

realistically, if you have no use for it, then better off selling each part individually

LAwLz reacted to wanderingfool2 in White House urges developers to avoid C and C++, use 'memory-safe' programming languages
It's not because people get used to writing code in a certain way, in C and C++ it makes it really easy to accidentally make a mistake and read memory out of bounds, or write too much to a certain pointer etc.

Like for example heartbleed, it really wasn't about writing code a certain way (I'm sure the guy normally did), it's just something that's easy to overlook.

I think instead of C, you will get more and more people writing rust instead (seems like the one that will likely take over) and you will eventually see a slow shift to it.

Even the best programers have super exploitable memory in C/C++

It is not as easy to make rust as exploitable, we are not talking about java here really.

Rust is finally an option for low level coding and is doing great in windows and linux drivers and will be slowing going into the kernel
WITH Rust existing, the need to write in C++ is decimated, for NEW projects that you are considering writing in C/C++ change to Rust.

yes there will still be exploits, thats not the point. The point is there will be LESS exploits from overlooking some pointer.

The language is the problem with C/C++ when there is a safer language that accomplishes the same tasks.

AKA 70% of vulnerabilities coming from C/C++ (which to be fair, is what the OS's are written in and Chromium)

LAwLz got a reaction from Needfuldoer in Air Canada found liable for chatbot's bad advice on plane tickets
For those like me who read the OP and didn't understand what was going on, this is what happened:

    1) Some guy wants to buy an airplane ticket because his grandma has died.
    2) Air Canada lets customers fly at a low price if the flight is booked because of death-related things with close family members.
    3) The guy asked the chatbot how to get the reduced price and was told to buy a regular ticket and then apply for a refund afterward.
    4) The guy booked the full-price flight and then when trying to apply for the refund was rejected because that's not how you should do it. What he should have done was call them and book the flight in a special way that would have made the flight cheaper upfront.
    5) The guy decided to sue Air Canada.

Unfortunate situation but luckily it seems like the guy was compensated for it.

That's what I find the most interesting in all of this. Air Canada tries to argue that they aren't responsible for what their employees do.

The story involving a chatbot is kind of irrelevant because it seems like Air Canada would have had the same position if it was a customer representative who gave a customer incorrect information (which happens quite a lot I might add).

I hope intel dont become a fab for AMD. not because they are rivals, but because i know for a fact that any time AMD releases a product that might not be as good as people hoped it would be, the argument would be "well clearly intel sabotaged it at the fab level".

But yes, we do need more foundries across the world, the reliance on TSMC is quite scary

LAwLz reacted to leadeater in Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger: I hope to build chips for Lisa Su and AMD
As I said in my post they have always been widely different across all Fabs and even from the same fab, there is no and has never been "7nm" class, "5nm" class, "3nm" class. They are ALL lies and aren't like some impossible to achieve theoretical process technology if it were done the old way etc.

Intel absolutely is not to blame here at all. TSMC, GloFo, Samsung all relaxed their "standards" on what is an equivalent process node to some hypothetical node size while Intel did not so there you have 3 companies more to blame than Intel. Intel very rightly and justly as a business aligned with this now entirely accepted even more foundation of lies and renamed their Intel 10nm node to Intel 7 aligning their lies with everyone else's lies.

The reality is Intel is perfectly fine here changing their node names, again. Pushing down a naming path that is already broken and dumb resulting in not all that nice to read and present is not a good idea. Those that have some idea about fabrication and nodes won't have any problem looking between companies, comparing and discussing them.

The whole situation was already completely irrelevant in just purely looking at "nm" since a 7nm fab process that used EUV is vastly better than one that used DUV and a 5nm DUV node might not be better in certain aspects than a 7nm EUV node. If you are actually truly interested in fabrication nodes, assessing and discussing them then nothing at all has changed or changed before.

Just be thankful the NAND manufacturers didn't persist with equivalency naming like the silicon fabricators did, one giant mess avoided.

Also TSMC can claim whatever they like, doesn't actually mean anything and they will always say their stuff is better for whatever reason they think, and they should. You think TSMC is going to say "Yea Intel's XYZ is going to be better than our current and future XYZ"? Never going to happen.

Maybe I'm missing something here. I don't get the confusion unless some are just overcomplicating things.

For example, if I were to say 3nm in this context, we could take it to mean any of TSMC N3, or Intel 3, or likely more. Moving to Angstrom makes a kind of sense once we get to low nm, and the currently accepted usage of 10A = 1nm isn't exactly difficult to comprehend.

It's very common for CPUs to have these kinds of issues and they get fixed in software or hardware revisions without it ever getting acknowledged in the wider media.

In this case though, from what I can tell, the issue seems to be related to motherboard settings that cause the CPU to boost too much because of "auto-OC" features and such.

You keep using the word "hyperbolic" but I am not sure it means what you think it means. Honestly, I don't really like your attitude and I don't think other people like it either. You come across as quite the unlikeable person. Maybe that's not how you are in person, but it is the vibe I am getting from this thread.

    Yes, NPC is a slur.
Yes, saying that Roblox isn't a "real game" is demeaning.

Anyway, trying to get back on topic, what other games have you tried? It's hard to recommend things when we don't really know much about what other games you have tried (if any) and what your daughter thought of them.

Two other people have mentioned Minecraft but you never responded to them. Would that be a good game to try? Maybe Stardew Valley would be another good one?

So now you're asking for help finding games that both of you might enjoy?

By the way, I think you should be more careful about how you word your posts. Calling your daughter slurs, being demeaning towards the things she likes and such is not exactly a good way to come across as "dad of the year". I think that's why a lot of people seem to react a certain way towards your posts.

I think you got it framed wrong here. It's about creating positive father and son/daughter experiences for them, not mainly for you. That's how you remembered the good times with your father. But what you're trying to do with your kids, is the opposite to that.

My understanding is that a slur is just a word or phrase that has a negative connotation that shows a lack of respect or opinion towards someone else.
Racial and religious slurs are often considered more serious than other types of slurs, but calling someone an "NPC" is in my eyes a slur. It's not just as serious as some other words we typically associate with "slurs" though, but not everything belonging to the same category has to be equal on the scale of how "bad" something is.

I do agree that people who use the word "NPC" are usually not the most pleasant people though, and using it towards your own 9-year-old daughter is a bit "strange" to say the least.

I wouldn't say rises (descends) to the level of a true slur like the N-word or F-word, but it is a really shitty insult, and favored by some of the shittiest people on the internet, many of whom certainly have no problem with using true slurs.

OP, you're insulting your 9 year old daughter in front of a bunch of strangers. Because she doesn't like the same video games you like. Stop and think about that.

I am having to work really hard to hold back here because this thread makes me extremely angry and if I said what my initial honest reaction was I'd probably get banned. My wife and I desperately wanted to have kids but haven't been able to. Here's duder who's been blessed with a kid who wants to spend time with him and all he can do is complain to strangers on the internet about how she's a lame normie.

OP, you say you want her to have the "gaming with dad" memory, and you say she wants to play games with you, but she doesn't seem to be your real priority. It's like some sort of silly Gamer pride about only playing Real Games is more important to you than bonding with your child.

In the course of her life, she's probably going to be into a bunch of stuff that doesn't interest you in the slightest. If you can't even find common ground with her in gaming because she doesn't like "real games" then what kind of effort are you going to make for that other stuff?

Did you ever put together a simple puzzle with her when she was younger? Was it a thrilling, exciting, challenging experience for you? Of course not. You did it because it was fun for her to do and fun for her to do with her dad.

Suck it up and play some Roblox. After that you can try introducing her to some stuff you like better, but you can't present it as "Your dad isn't going to do the stuff you like because it's lame and you're lame, here's stuff you should like instead."
