so my input, having ZERO experience cutting a mobo OR pcb. is DO YOU NEED THE MOBO IF IT FAILS? if the answer is NO then cut away sir. with nothing to lose why worry. experimentation is fun and educational. however, if you need this board FOR ANY REASON or would have to spend money to replace it for any reason, then no way dont cut it unless you know from the manufacturer (dell will never tell you crap) 
 
just my 2 cents tho, there is likely something in teh middle layers we cant see. dell is super cheap and would likely not have any section of unused pcb or they would just cut it themselves

Well i think you just answered your own question then. night mate, sleep on it im sure youll agree in the morning.

I also have the option to cut away some of the iron. Might do that.
 
Bedtime now, so I'll let it sink in for a bit, and then think again about it tomorrow.
 
@   ABUSIV3: I don't "need" the motherboard, but if I break it, I'd have a spare 8GB of DDR2 and a spare q6600... Not a good idea, I would really like to use them now (had them since last year December, never really used them...

That signature... It's kind of funny to see you give advice in something like this... And for the advice to be somewhat mostly reasonable...
 
OP should make a poll, to cut the mobo or not to cut, just to make it clear for him. (I hope he decides not to cut the mobo)

You should follow the directions. You are working in just a small area with very little amount of over all heat that it does not matter the orientation of the card.

Hot air does rise but in a case environment, hot air is everywhere and moves very slowly.  You can ignore the Hot air rises advice when building a case.  Proper air pressure is much more important as well as direct airflow.

i thought so, i mean, I've never seen a 65 core smartphone until now...

go with the recommended magnum. dont hate for the reference but thats what jays 2 cents "skunkworks" is in, and thats a gorgeous machine. im sure linus would approve.

got the air 540 and 240. not a fan of either. both are for sale lol. the 540  is way to asymmetrical and they "say" it can be positioned on its side but then the case feet show and its atrocious. the 240 can be laid down but then it looks like crap NOT laid down. both are GOOD cases but i feel are way overpriced for how lacking they are overall.
540 looks like a commercial printer.

Well i would love to do my Skunkworks Mini in a Magnum M8A but I have so save up for that. My Original plan was getting it in Gunmetal and just use green mint accents well it will sty a dream...

There is really no need for a guide. But most people will click yes because it does not affect them in any way so why deny you. A poll is completely useless in this type of situation.

I understand what you're saying and unfortunately this cannot be done. There will always be lag unless you had a separate monitor that has hdmi in.

Well without the CrossFire bridge your rig will walk all over his with a 980. But he'll probably want to re-bench after you tell him lol

i almost want to buy IRacing just to use it as its his FAVORITE GAME... and he crawls at 10 fps average. i dont think he overclocks anything. i will absolutely oc everything in my rig, hence the custom loop (obvious?)

If he hasn't overclocked his 7970s, and your 980 overclocks really well you might do alright against them. If you really want to show the power of Intel you should benchmark StarCraft II, it's super heavy on single-threaded performance. His AMD will probably get half the performance or less compared to an overclocked 3770K, if you can get yours to 4.5GHz or so

It depends what cpu is in your friends' rig.
If it's a quite recent cpu that's overclocked. Well i won't be suprised if you get chopped.
Performance of dual 7970 and a 980 are very very similar if crossfire scales well.
Crossfire and SLI are something very strong when it works well, don't underestimate it.

Well, dual 7970s will stomp over your single 760 (even a single 7970 would beat it by a little), but your CPU will crush his in most games. Sadly most games are dependent more on the GPU than the CPU so you should wait for the 980.
 
Although, in the picture his cards don't appear to be connected by a CrossFire bridge so unless you just took that off while building and put it back on later, his second card will just be sitting idle the whole time 
 
The "killer" is an ASRock board by the way.

Your CPU is going to kick ass, but your GPU is going to lack quite a bit.
Assuming he has an 8350, it won't do to bad.
With a 980, however, you will win for sure.

Oh, well, that's a new thing learned.
