Honestly, it depends. The only games that I ALWAYS use a controller for are racing games because you need to have analog control and I don't have room for a wheel. But I have my KB/M, an X360 controller and a Steam Controller and I just use whatever works best for the game I'm playing and where I'm playing it. I'm currently playing the first Witcher entirely with my Steam Controller.

Thanks for all the info guys. I've decided to use their eval copy to tinker around with. This is actually what Microsoft recommended outside of taking one of their formal courses. Since I already have VirtualBox on my machine, I've set up 1 server VM and 4 host vms with windows 7-10 in a host only network to play with. when the eval or one of the clients freak out that they aren't "genuine", I'll just rebuild the VMs. This setup is what a rep from Microsoft and I came up with and he said it was perfectly OK to do. He said as long as I'm just playing around with it and not making a "permanent" setup, I can keep rebuilding these VMs for as long as I like.

No, you're on their network therefore they control what is allowed on it. You can try different ports or proxies but then you risk them blacklisting your device if detected.

I leave it to the parents to decide how mature their child is. The rating systems have given them the information. It's up to them to decide what their child is ready for.

Yes. You may have to download updated drivers from Microsoft but it is natively supported in Windows 7.

In the past, we thought 1GB was overkill. No there's a time and place for everything in my mind. This is no exception.

I can't understand recommending multi-GPU configs for a new build. At that price, I would get a 980 that's if you can find any 900 series cards right now or get a R9 290X Vapor X from Sapphire.

It falls in the category of mainstream/enthusiast. Not quite enough for enthusiast but too much for the mainstream user. It would be Pentium/I3 = casual, I3/I5 = Casual/Mainstream, I5/I7 = Mainstream/Enthusiast and X99/X79 is straight up Enthusiast except for the I7-3820k (That's basically just an I7 3770k with a semi-unlocked multiplier)

Laptop hardware tends to degrade quite more faster over desktops. I'd say he & you could buy quite decent components and build a cute & portable MITX build for around the same price although you got both hands full of cables, monitor + the machine itself.
I'd definitely see what's currently out of the market in-terms of laptops that fit into the $1000 budget then find it at a local store play around with it for about 10-20 minutes then find an mini itx/matx case. From there you could compare between portable functionality & compute performance per cubic metre.
